Tryggelev: Nature Observation and History by the Nor

If you would like to combine nature observation with cultural and historical impressions, Tryggelev offers two clearly distinct areas of interest: the protected natural area around Tryggelev Nor and its long architectural and local history. This allows you to shape your stay according to your interests, alternating between birdlife, walking trails, fishing and historical traces.

Birdlife in a Protected Coastal Lagoon Habitat

Tryggelev Nor is protected nationally and internationally as a bird protection and habitat area, and is also designated as a nature reserve to protect its distinctive birdlife. The Nor is home to a protected coastal lagoon habitat and rare bird species such as the bittern. At the same time, it is one of Denmark’s most bird-rich wetlands. Birds can be observed there all year round; in spring and autumn, large flocks of waders, geese and ducks can be seen.

There are birdwatching towers at Tryggelev Nor for observing the birdlife. The floating observation hide offers a special perspective: one-way windows allow you to observe the birdlife close to the water’s surface. Those who value nature experiences when choosing a location will therefore find a variety of observation points and landscape impressions here, all within a protected wetland.

Architectural History and Bronze Age Traces

The cultural environment comprising Tryggelev Church, the church barn and the old vicarage makes 800 years of architectural, cultural and local history visible. Tryggelev Church features Romanesque elements in its north door, one window and its granite baptismal font. The church barn at Tryggelev Church dates from around 1300.

Historical traces have also been preserved in the landscape around Tryggelev Nor. Of the seven Bronze Age burial mounds originally located at Tryggelev Nor, three remain today. The walking route to the Bronze Age burial mounds at Tryggelev Nor passes two birdwatching hides, one of which is located over the water. From the car park at the end of Stenbækvej to the Bronze Age burial mounds at Tryggelev Nor, the route is 550 metres long.

Trails, Mobility and Other Activities

The walking section at Tryggelev Nor is 1.7 kilometres long. In addition, Tryggelev Nor has a 675-metre-long path for wheelchairs, walking frames, electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The different route lengths help you plan your walk and nature observation according to the desired distance, without equating the historical destinations and observation sites with one another.

Another option is Langelands Lystfiskersø in Tryggelev. The put-and-take fishing lake covers 10,000 m² and is stocked mainly with rainbow trout. Fishing rods can be rented at Langelands Lystfiskersø for four hours. In the wider Tryggelev area, regional buses serve the small villages in the Sydlangeland area.
