Hesselbjerg on Langeland’s West Coast

Hesselbjerg Beach (Østersøbadet) is located on the west coast in the southern part of the island of Langeland. The coastal area has a sandy beach, a bathing jetty, and Blue Flag status. The beach name Østersøbadet also refers to this coastal area. Hesselbjerg’s location on Langeland’s west coast, the sandy beach, and the bathing jetty describe the immediate coastal area of Hesselbjerg.

Beach, Bathing Jetty and Wind

Hesselbjerg Beach (Østersøbadet) offers optimal conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing. More specific orientation along the shore is provided by the area south of the bathing jetty: there are excellent waves for kiteboarding and windsurfing there. The southern section of the beach therefore provides the more specific spatial reference for the waves. When planning a day by the water, this area can be considered separately from the general beach reference.

Nørreballe Nor and Views Inland

From Hesselbjerg, Nørreballevej leads to a car park with an information board and a view of Nørreballe Nor. In addition to the open coastal area, this adds another landscape reference: the view extends not only towards the beach, but also towards Nørreballe Nor. Nørreballevej and the car park provide the practical location reference for this viewpoint. Those who include views inland when choosing a location can consider this as a second landscape point alongside the beach.

Cycling on Langeland

The 100-kilometre paved Langeland cycle route passes through junction 69 in Hesselbjerg. The 100 kilometres refers to the entire paved route, while point 69 establishes the local reference in Hesselbjerg. For a cycling trip, Hesselbjerg can be incorporated into the island route via this junction. Those planning a longer paved route can consider the total length of the route separately from the individual junction.

Stone Age Monuments and Bronze Age Cup Marks

Hesselbjerg long barrow #2 is a Stone Age monument dating from 3950 to 2801 BC. It has a megalithic chamber made up of four supporting stones and one capstone. More than 22 cup marks are located on the upper surface of the capstone. The capstone belongs to the megalithic chamber and at the same time bears the more than 22 cup marks on its upper surface.

The site known as “Hesselbjerg dolmen site” is classified as a dolmen or passage grave from the Stone Age, dating from 3950 to 2801 BC. The site also contains Bronze Age cup marks dating from 1700 to 501 BC. The cup marks at the site therefore originate from a later period than Hesselbjerg long barrow #2. Culture enthusiasts therefore have two specific themes to explore in Hesselbjerg: a Stone Age monument with a megalithic chamber and Bronze Age cup marks at a site classified as a dolmen or passage grave.
