Søndenbro: Landscape, Farms and Railway History

Ridge between the inlet and the lowlands

Søndenbro is situated on a gently sloping ridge on the island, where numerous Hatbakker occur as characteristic glacial hills. Magleby Nor lies west of the village, while flat areas extend to the east. Over thousands of years, Magleby Nor shaped the topographical conditions as well as settlement and route development in southern Langeland. The landscape around Søndenbro therefore brings together a hilly ridge, the inlet to the west and the flatter eastern areas within a small geographical space. This spatial contrast forms the natural setting for the site's historical routes and settlement connections.

Name and historic country road

Søndenbro is first mentioned in 1576 in the form “Søndenbro”. A historic country road ran from the Høje Bro area east of Fakkebjerg via Søgård to Bagenkop. The historic route should not be equated with present-day transport connections. Høje Bro, Fakkebjerg, Søgård and Bagenkop thus belonged to the same historic route; its course lies in the past and does not refer to a current transport connection.

Administration of the southern part of the parish

Historically, the southern part of the parish was administered from Søndenbro. This reference explicitly concerns the former ecclesiastical and economic structure. Søndenbro thus appears not only as a designation for a locality, but also as the starting point for the historical administration of the southern part of the parish. This historical reference concerns the southern part of the parish, not the parish as a whole.

Farms and dairy buildings

In the area around Søndenbro, Søgård was established in 1673 from a number of abandoned farms. The present buildings at Søgård date from 1857. The farm's history therefore encompasses both its foundation from abandoned farms and the present buildings at Søgård dating from 1857. Together with the associated state smallholder farms in the area around Søndenbro, Søgård and these farms form a valuable cultural and historical setting in the Langeland area. The buildings of Søndenbro Mejeri, also known as Søndenbro Andelsmejeri, are rendered white and covered with red tile roofs. For those interested in culture, this brings together the history of abandoned farms, state smallholder farms and a dairy building.

Søndenbro Station and the Langeland Railway

Railway history is also part of Søndenbro's development. Construction of Søndenbro Station began in 1909; the station was completed in 1910, about one year before the opening of the Langeland Railway on 4 October 1911. The former Søndenbro Station was closed together with the Langeland Railway on 29 September 1962. The railway chronology supplements the older country road with a later transport connection in Søndenbro. The station was therefore built before the railway opened, while its closure took place together with that of the Langeland Railway. The older country road and the later railway thus belong to different historical transport phases in Søndenbro.
