Bagenkop: Fishing Harbour, Beach and Coastal Paths

Bagenkop combines the character of a historic fishing village with a distinctive harbour and coastal profile. Bagenkop Harbour was established in the 16th century as a small fishing village on a headland; in 1858, the fishermen were able to use a new harbour at the southern mouth of Magleby Nor. The harbour is the largest fishing harbour in southern Denmark and has modern facilities for sailors and other visitors on the water.

Harbour Life and Fishing History

Fiskeriets Hus presents the history of fishing. There, you can see a fisherman’s home as it used to look; the exhibits also include fishing equipment that was used and workshops that supported the fishing profession. An interactive simulator lets you steer a fishing boat through Bagenkop Harbour. The fishing quarter contains old original fishermen’s houses with a history spanning more than 100 years, which are gradually being restored. Ulla Keramik was founded in 1968: In the workshop, clay is thrown or shaped, dried and fired; the adjoining shop sells finished vases, dinnerware sets and jugs.

Beach and Maritime Activities

Bagenkop Beach is 650 metres long and 20 to 30 metres wide and consists of fine sand. Bagenkop Beach has a fine sandy seabed, good bathing conditions and calm water. The area north of Bagenkop Harbour on South Langeland is suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Vinterbadepunkt Bagenkop offers a winter bathing facility and changing facilities in Bagenkop Harbour. The North Pier at Bagenkop Harbour offers good conditions for fishing for cod, flatfish, mackerel, sea trout and garfish. This allows you to choose between calm water at the beach, sporting activities north of the harbour, winter bathing and fishing at the North Pier, depending on your maritime interests.

Walking Along the Coast and Through Nature

Ildsjæle Fodsporet is approximately 3 kilometres long and passes historical sites as well as the natural landscapes of South Langeland. The walk near Bagenkop is an official signature trail in the UNESCO Global Geopark The South Funen Archipelago. The Bagenkop Art Route is 4 kilometres long, follows the coast through gently rolling terrain and returns to the harbour. The harbour square at Ildsjæle Fodsporet is the venue for the annual Harbour Festival in Bagenkop.

Church and Activities at Fællesskabsparken

Bagenkop Church is the youngest and smallest church on Langeland and was built in 1920. Fællesskabsparken in Bagenkop offers 12-hole mini golf and a padel court. It also includes a Tarzan course, a zip line and a playground with a pirate ship.

Getting Around the Town

Bagenkop’s fishing quarter is easily accessible on foot from the harbour and town centre and is suitable for people with reduced mobility. Parking is available near the town and harbour; Bagenkop can be reached by public transport.
