Tranekær: Castle, Gardens and Trails on Langeland

Tranekær features a historic townscape and a varied landscape. You can stroll among listed buildings, while forests, hedgerows and marshland shape the surrounding area. This landscape was formed by ice 20,000 years ago. Castle, Church and Milling History

Tranekær Castle is Denmark’s oldest secular inhabited house. Tranekær Church contains an altarpiece created in 1847, painted by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, which was his last. The town’s history also includes the present-day Dutch windmill of Tranekær Castle Mill, built in 1846. The magazine building of Tranekær Castle Mill also houses an exhibition on the history of milling on Langeland.

Medicinal Herbs and Art in the Park

Medicinhaverne i Tranekær has the largest collection of medicinal plants in Northern Europe, with more than 800 different plants. In the individual gardens and on the trees in the arboretum, signs display the Danish and Latin names, medicinal significance and country of origin. All plants in Børnenes Medicinhave are edible. This gives the site a clear focus for visitors who want not only to look at plants, but also to understand their names and uses.

TICKON – Tranekær Internationale Center for Kunst Og Natur offers another cultural perspective. Since 1993, more than 20 Danish and international artists have created works in the park. The art installations and sculptures are made from natural materials and designed to slowly decay and return to earth and stones. TICKON Park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset.

Hiking, Cycling and Special Experiences

For hikers, the 9-kilometre section of the Øhavsstien between Tranekær and Dageløkke runs along the west coast of Langeland. The Øhavsstien is intended exclusively for hikers and is marked with blue pictograms of a small white hiker and the word “Øhavsstien”. Cyclists can choose the 22-kilometre Tranekær Castle Route. With Tranekær Castle as its highlight, it runs through forests, open fields and historic villages.

Bookable experiences include a guided tour of honey extraction with Langelands Biavlerforening. The tour takes place in a beekeeper’s suit and can be booked through the association’s website.
