Rudkøbing: Coastal Trails, Harbour and Island History
If you would like to combine coastal trails, nature observation and urban history on your trip to Langeland, Rudkøbing offers several clearly distinct points of interest. Options range from a short walk through the town and longer stages on foot or by bicycle to water-based experiences and exhibitions. When looking for a hotel or accommodation in Rudkøbing, you can therefore first decide whether culture, nature, activity or water should be the main focus.
Coastal Trails and Landscapes
The 58 km section of the Øhavsstien on Langeland runs along the coast, across the island through attractive natural areas, and through Rudkøbing, Spodsbjerg and Lohals. The section between Rudkøbing and Spodsbjerg is 13 km long. The 2.1 km self-guided town walk follows the By- og Parkstierne in Rudkøbing. It offers a compact way to explore the town on foot. For planning your day, the Øhavsstien provides a route through the coastal landscape, while the town walk focuses on the town.
For further walks, Fredskoven offers opportunities both in the open Vejle and in the sheltered woodland. Rudkøbing Vejle was originally a fjord and today forms a wet meadow in summer and shallow lakes in winter. Rudkøbing Vejle offers good opportunities for observing ducks and waders. The seasonal changes therefore also shape how you can experience this landscape.
History, Science and Geopark Knowledge
The H.C. Ørsted Udstilling honours the scientist H.C. Ørsted, who came from Rudkøbing, and offers interactive experiments on electromagnetism. Rudkøbing Kirke has a well-preserved nave from the Late Romanesque period. Its tower, with its characteristic curved gables, was built in 1621. Rudkøbing Bymølle has stood on the town’s fortification rampart since the 17th century; the present Bymølle has stood there since 1820.
Langelands Museum displays well-preserved artefacts from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as finds from the Renaissance fishing village of Sandhagen. The Geopark Besøgscenter Langeland in Rudkøbing presents the geology and the natural and cultural heritage of the UNESCO Global Geopark Det Sydfynske Øhav. Admission to the Geopark Besøgscenter Langeland is free.
Cycling and Water at the Harbour
At Rudkøbing Havn, bicycles can be borrowed free of charge for excursions in Rudkøbing and the surrounding area. The Bagenkop–Rudkøbing stage of the Herregårdsruten is 37 km long. The different route lengths help you choose between a short outing and a longer cycle tour without basing your planning on a fixed travel time.
Rudkøbing Badeanstalt offers a public bathing facility. It has a ramp that enables wheelchair users to access the water.
