Venslev between Architectural History and Village Life

Venslev combines Venslev Church, with its multifaceted architectural history, and a village setting of older farmsteads, houses, a village street, and a pond. The topics range from Romanesque and Gothic church architecture to village gathering places.

Venslev Church

Venslev Church was built around 1100 and has a Romanesque nave. The eastern wall of the churchyard is medieval. Between 1475 and 1525, the church was extended three times with additions in the Gothic style. Venslev Church was first mentioned in 1370 in the book of the Bishop of Roskilde. The building therefore allows several historical construction phases to be viewed together directly.

The furnishings also span various periods. The altarpiece in Venslev Church dates from around 1650. The pulpit dates from around 1600 and is designed in the Renaissance style. The bell originally dates from 1730 and was recast in 1920. The altarpiece, pulpit, and bell place the furnishings within the period from around 1600 to 1920.

Venslev Church is open only by prior arrangement. If you would like to visit the church interior, this arrangement should therefore be part of your planning. Rasmus Sørensen taught at Venslev School until 1844.

Memorials and Religious Local History

In the early 19th century, Venslev was a central location for a newly emerging religious revival movement. From 1833, Rasmus Sørensen was the local organizer of the revival movement in Zealand in Venslev.

Near Venslev stands a memorial stone for British airmen who were shot down, erected on April 9, 1945. Next to the memorial stone stands a monument made from the remains of the aircraft's propellers. The memorial stone and propeller monument add a remembrance of the 20th century to the local history.

Village Character and Gathering Places

Venslev features a mixture of older farmsteads and houses. Former tenant farms have remained preserved in clusters within the village. Venslev's village street passes Venslev Church and the village pond. You can have lunch at the pond next to Venslev Church. In this way, the village character, route, and a specific opportunity for a break come together in a manageable village setting.

The former school grounds in Venslev are now an activity area. The activity area includes a children's playground. The picnic shelter in Venslev is located near a petanque court and a newly acquired barbecue. These places complement the historical tour of the village with opportunities for exercise, play, and a shared break. A new picnic shelter is planned in Venslev as a shared shelter and is intended to provide protection from rain, wind, and evening dew.
