Stillinge Strand: Open West Coast, Strandtorvet and Nature Experiences

Stillinge Strand is located on the open, west-facing coast. The beach is sandy; at the water’s edge, small stones lie alongside the fine sand. This puts the landscape itself at the center: the direction of the coast and the changing shoreline give the area a clear character that can be experienced immediately. At Stillinge Strand, you can take in the open west coast and the varying nature of the shoreline together.

Strandtorvet between the car park and the bathing beach

Strandtorvet is located along the route between the car park and the bathing beach at Stillinge Strand. Wooden terraces with benches, sun loungers and picnic tables have been created at Strandtorvet. Its location between the car park and the bathing beach connects the wooden terraces with the beach area. The various seating options are part of the design of this section of the beach. For a day at the beach, Strandtorvet can be included as a separate stopping point on the way to the bathing beach.

The development of the square

In 2020, Strandtorvet was transformed from a former bus turning area into a recreational and play area. Strandtorvet thus stands as a separate square within the beach area. The former bus turning area forms part of the history of today’s recreational and play area.

Beach and nature experiences

At Stillinge Strand, visitors can take part in nature experiences led by a nature guide as part of the Blue Flag programme. The nature guide provides a guided way of experiencing the beach, while the programme explicitly connects nature with the location. Alongside spending time on the sandy beach, this gives you another, nature-focused way to experience Stillinge Strand, without this constituting a fixed daily programme. The nature experiences are therefore among the explicitly guided activities at the beach and are offered alongside free time by the water.

Water conditions and accessibility

As a Blue Flag beach, Stillinge Strand has rescue and first-aid equipment. The beach is also accessible to wheelchair users. The water gradually becomes deeper, while the current is very limited. At the shore, the rescue and first-aid equipment, accessibility for wheelchair users and the water conditions described here all come together. The information on accessibility refers to the beach itself and does not automatically apply to other paths or facilities in the surrounding area.

Stillinge Strand in its historical context

Stillinge Strand has long served as a preferred beach for the residents of Slagelse. At the same time, a public beach was already accessible at Stillinge Strand, while most of the rest of the coastal area at Stillinge Strand belonged to a few families from Slagelse and the surrounding area. The history of the place is therefore closely connected with the question of who had access to the beach and how public beach use differed from private ownership. For the local history, it is crucial that the public beach and private ownership existed side by side.
