Stillinge Beach: Open Coast and Strandtorvet

Strandtorvet between the Car Park and the Beach

Strandtorvet is located between the car park and the bathing beach. In 2020, the former bus turning area was converted into a place to spend time and play. Wooden terraces with benches, sun loungers and picnic tables are part of the square’s design; the physical amenities may change. Alongside the open shoreline, the area therefore has a named square whose history runs from its former transport function to recreation and play.

A Beach with a History

Even before the First World War, Stillinge Beach was exceptionally popular. For many years, it was the preferred beach for the residents of the town of Slagelse. The historical use of the coast is also characterised by a contrast: while a public beach was accessible, most of the remaining coastal area belonged to a few families from Slagelse and the surrounding area. This perspective adds the place’s former significance for the town’s residents and the different uses of the coastal area to the description of the beach as it is today.
