Sunnersberg on KÃ¥lland: Church, Pilgrim Trails and Cycling Tour
Sunnersbergs kyrka is located on Kålland, about nine kilometres northwest of Lidköping. You can find more information about the village of Sunnersberg. Sunnersbergs kyrka stands high on a hill; its tall, slender spire is visible from far away. The oldest parts of the church date from the late 12th century, while it acquired its present appearance in 1869.
Culture
The church combines its long architectural history with remarkable individual features. The pulpit at Sunnersbergs kyrka is a 17th-century work; in the 1670s, it was funded and donated by Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. A preserved double lily stone is kept in the entrance hall.
The altarpiece depicts Christ’s body, carried by angels. It is probably a work by Anthonis van Dyck, painted in the 1620s. The churchyard contains several older tombstones as well as a brick-built materials shed dating from 1746.
Another visible cultural and historical landmark is Riddaregårdens väderkvarn. The windmill was originally built in 1879 by millwright Anders Bruto Göte for Janne Jansson at Holma farm in the parish of Sunnersberg. Along the road between Lidköping and Läckö Castle, it is a highly visible landmark. In the wider surrounding region, ten of the 18 Fröslundasköldarna can be viewed at Västergötlands Museum.
Trails
The Pilgrimsled Kålland pilgrimage route runs from central Lidköping to Läckö on Kållandsö and passes, among other places, Sunnersbergs kyrka. The route is approximately 46 kilometres long in total. It is part of the Pilgrimsled Skaraborg pilgrimage route and is marked with the Saint Olof Cross.
There is a simple pilgrims’ path at Kyrkskolan. Kyrkskolan Sunnersberg offers several sleeping places, toilets and showers. Sunnersberg Medieval Church is also stop 8 on the Kållandsövägen tourist route.
Local
The Läckö Kött farm shop is located at Sunnersberg Backa 3, 53198 Lidköping. In addition to its own meat, it offers other regionally produced goods from local suppliers.
Cycling
Historiska Kålland is a 34-kilometre cycling tour that mainly follows smaller, lightly trafficked country roads. The starting point at Lidköping Travel Centre can be reached by train or bus.
In the wider surrounding region, Historiska Kålland passes through cultural and historical landscapes. Along the tour, there are opportunities to make detours into nature and go swimming in Lake Vänern.
There are therefore two different formats to choose from: the marked pilgrimage route and the cycling tour through cultural and historical landscapes. The respective information on distance, route and marking gives the activities their own distinct profiles, without combining them into a single route offering.
When planning a trip to Sunnersberg, choosing a hotel can complement the themes of the church, pilgrimage route and cycling tour. Travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions remain separate considerations when choosing a hotel and complement the information provided about the destination.
