Öckerö’s coastline is particularly impressive at Hummerviken: extensive expanses of rounded stones stretch out into the sea, while a flat, barren landscape is characterised by sparse vegetation.
Nature
Rördammen is one of the largest wetlands in Öckerö Municipality and is known for its diverse birdlife. There are several picnic tables around the wetland. Hjälviks badplats is located on Öckerö, as is Saltasvikens badplats.
Saltasviken is a cliffside bathing spot in a bay on the western side of Öckerö, with a concrete pier and ladders. Buoys mark the area at Saltasvikens badplats where swimming is permitted.
Hiking
The nature trail on Öckerö is 4.6 kilometres long. The Gothenburg Archipelago Trail offers a larger setting: the hiking trail is 34 kilometres long and divided into five stages. It runs along the western edge of Öckerö, passing several sea bays surrounded by cliffs, and leads past the military fort below Jacobs Bratt on Öckerö.
The different trail formats make it easy to compare the length and stage structure directly. Öckerö’s exercise trail is easily accessible for people who have difficulty walking on uneven ground, including wheelchair users and people with pushchairs.
The Harbour and Maritime Impressions
Öckerö’s guest harbour is located in the south-western part of the fishing harbour. It has two floating pontoons, a quay for mooring alongside and space for around 30 boats. The harbour also has a bathing jetty with a sauna and an adjacent boules court.
Local fishermen offer cooked crayfish directly from their boats in Öckerö harbour.
Mobility
Local bus routes 1 and 2 connect Fotö, Hönö, Öckerö and Hälsö. The Öckerö nature area and the exercise trail can be reached by bus from Gothenburg towards Hönö/Öckerö or from the Pinan ferry terminal on Hönö towards Burö.
Ferry route 296 operates as part of Västtrafik’s public transport network between Öckerö, Framnäs on Björkö, Kalvsund and Grötö. The Hönöleden connects Lilla Varholmen with Hönö/Öckerö; the ferry route is 2,500 metres long and the crossing takes twelve minutes.
Culture and History
Mariakyrkan on Öckerö was built as a wooden church around 1240. It features late-Baroque ceiling paintings from the late 18th century, signed by Jean Lilliedal.
Next to Öckerö gamla kyrka, several historic farmsteads with four residential buildings line Bygdevägen. Öckerö hembygdsförening maintains and brings the area of these historic farmsteads to life.
Utställningshallen is located in Öckerö Library. It presents exhibitions covering a broad range of subjects, as well as a variety of artistic techniques and forms of expression.
