Källö-Knippla: Sea, the “Slingan” Loop and Harbour Life
Between the Sea, Rocks and Harbour
Källö-Knippla combines a maritime landscape, short active experiences and a vivid local history. The “Slingan” loop on Knippla provides particularly useful guidance when choosing accommodation: the 1.5-kilometre route runs along the sea, through vegetation and across rocky terrain. It is part of the Göteborgs skärgårdsled, which in turn forms part of the longer Kuststigen. At the highest point on Knippla is the Wideringen viewpoint, offering a 360-degree view over the islands, sea and horizon.
The “Slingan” Loop as a Starting Point
Along the loop there are benches and tables as well as a large barbecue area. The route has been adapted for accessibility, although it includes some steeper sections. Anyone wanting to combine sea views, rocky passages and a short circular walk will find several distinctive points on Knippla along a single described route.
Swimming Area and Activities on Knippla
Tranbärsvikens badplats is located on the eastern side of Källö-Knippla. The swimming area has a diving tower, floating jetties and a toilet. There is also an outdoor padel court on Tranbärsvägen. An outdoor gym is located next to the football pitch and the beach on Knippla. There is also a mini-golf course next to the outdoor terrace. At the café in the harbour, there is a pétanque court for everyone, except during the times when KIK holds matches or league competitions there.
Getting There and the Harbour
Källö-Knippla can be reached by boat or by car ferry from the Burö ferry terminal on Hälsö. Knippla guest harbour has 130 berths for visiting boats, including 5 accessible berths. The harbour is also an important part of the local history: in the 1960s, 29 fishing boats were moored there, with 6 to 8 fishermen working on each one. According to the recorded local history, the first inhabitants of Källö-Knippla were fishermen who benefited from the great herring period of the 1790s.
Buildings, Chapel and Summer Programme
The townscape preserves authentic Bohuslän buildings, with houses standing close together. The site of Knippla kapell was used by the temperance association Verdandi at the beginning of the 20th century. Worship services with praise music are listed at Knippla kapell on 27 August, 17 September and 22 October, each at 7 p.m. Coffee is usually served after services.
The events programme also brings the harbour and the local community to life. Källö-Knippla’s summer programme includes a harbour festival with live music. Music evenings and boat bingo take place at Knippla harbour square in July. Källö-Knippla also hosts a traditional Midsummer celebration for children and adults. For quieter evenings, the sauna on Knippla offers evening sunshine and the opportunity to cool off with a dip in the sea.
