Herrljunga: Hiking Trails, History and Local Culture

The municipality of Herrljunga has a total of almost 130 kilometres of hiking and exercise trails. The shortest is 1.3 kilometres long, while the longest is 21 kilometres. A pilgrim trail also passes through the municipality, measuring 47.5 kilometres in its entirety.

The selection of places includes Herrljunga, Ljung and Annelund.

Hiking Trails and Water

The Nossan Promenade is approximately 1.8 kilometres long and runs between Haraberget and Orraholmen. Gula spåret is an approximately 4-kilometre circular trail connected to Skoghälla. Blåa spåret is an approximately 2.4-kilometre circular trail starting in the Orraholmen recreational area.

In the municipality, the Orraholmen recreational area offers opportunities for hiking on trails near the Herrljunga urban area. There is a picnic area by the lake with benches, a wind shelter and a barbecue area. At the southern entrance to Haraberget, an accessible paved path leads down from Grindarna to the pond; café tables are available there in summer.

Haraberget is a small hill in the Herrljunga urban area near the Nossan River. The river can be explored by canoe or kayak, but is challenging because of the many places where boats must be carried around obstacles. Thirty different fish species have been recorded in the Nossan. Herrljunga Sportcenter has a 25-metre swimming pool.

Nature

In the municipality of Herrljunga, Molla bokskog has marked trails, boardwalks and a picnic area. The history of the oldest part of this woodland dates back to the 17th century.

History and Culture

Herrljunga Kulturhus houses an art gallery and an auditorium. The same Kulturhus is also home to the Fåglavik Glassworks Museum. In the municipality, Jällby kyrka is one of the few surviving wooden churches in Västergötland.

At Gäsene Tingshus, visitors can see a well-preserved courtroom from 1776. The Skogsbo Hallkista in the municipality of Herrljunga is 4,000 years old. Elisabeth Hesselblad was born in Fåglavik on 4 June 1870.

The preserved FÃ¥glavik railway station complex includes the station building, outbuildings, a root cellar and a garden. FÃ¥glavik railway station is also the only surviving example of an early type of station designed by the SJ architectural office.

In the municipality, Odins flisor consists of three upright stones standing on the same elevation. The Iron Age burial ground at Nycklabacken contains nearly 200 archaeological remains. The Hembygdspark in Herrljunga comprises approximately 20 buildings.

Events and Markets

Knallemarknad Herrljunga takes place on the second Tuesday of every month and is a long-standing tradition. The Kullingstrofén Rally Cup event is held annually in the municipality of Herrljunga.

The international Frivolten Cup trampoline competition takes place in Herrljunga in May. At Rekoring Herrljunga, goods can be purchased directly from producers once a month; collection usually takes place on the last Wednesday of each month at Röda torget in Herrljunga.
