Mölndal: Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture near Gothenburg

The Bohusleden runs 26 kilometres through the entire municipality of Mölndal and then continues northwards. Two of the 27 stages of this long-distance hiking trail run through the municipality of Mölndal. Mölndal borders Gothenburg and is only a few minutes from the Liseberg amusement park.

Trails

Djursjöleden is a 20-kilometre circular trail in flat terrain in Bunketorp in Lindome and is suitable for beginners. Rådasjön runt is a marked, 12-kilometre circular route that mainly follows gravel nature trails through deciduous forest near the lake. The approximately six-kilometre-long Hälsans stig runs as a walking and fitness trail through the central parts of Mölndal and combines urban culture with greenery. The marked Sandsjöbackaleden hiking trail runs from north to south through the part of the Sandsjöbacka nature reserve located in Mölndal Municipality. There are several shelters and barbecue areas along the Djursjöleden.

Landscape and Nature

Änggårdsbergen is home to an arboretum with a collection of exotic trees from various parts of the Northern Hemisphere that is considered unique in Sweden and well worth seeing. Bredfjället in Änggårdsbergen is a viewpoint overlooking the western parts of Gothenburg. Änggårdsbergen also has a well-developed network of trails; signs provide information about the distances to the various areas.

The Hårssjön-Rambo mosse area includes, among other things, deciduous forest, shore and swamp forests, as well as a mosaic of wetlands. Safjället is a wooded mountain plateau in Mölndal with numerous roads and trails. The Sandsjöbacka nature reserve contains extensive heathlands, where up to 150 bird species can be observed. Hårssjön is a shallow lake suitable for birdwatching and has an observation tower. The ravine, also known as Svejserdalen, is surrounded by beech forest, which is unusual at this latitude.

In the Hårssjön-Rambo mosse nature reserve, birdwatching, hiking, orienteering, horseback riding and cycling are among the activities listed. When cycling in Mölndal's natural areas, cycling is permitted only on designated roads and trails and only during certain periods.

Culture and History

Gunnebo Slott was built between 1784 and 1796. The commissioner was the Gothenburg merchant John Hall the Elder, and the architect was Carl Wilhelm Carlberg. Gunnebo Slott och Trädgårdar offers guided tours of the castle and the green cultural heritage landscape all year round. At Gunnebo kulturreservat, visitors can stroll through the historic gardens; the cultural reserve also features a well-preserved 18th-century landscape.

The collections of Mölndals stadsmuseum comprise almost 40,000 pictures and objects. The museum can be reached by bus, tram and commuter train via the Mölndals bro, Mölndals innerstad or Mölndal station stops. Safjället contains graves from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as remains of a hillfort.

Kvarnbyn is considered Mölndal's industrial historical cradle and a cultural environment of national interest. Its history can be explored with the help of information boards along the rapids and on the buildings. The Mölndals waterfalls have a drop of 48 metres and are illuminated at night.
