Mölndal between cultural history and nature
Accommodation in Mölndal
Mölndal brings together prehistoric traces, medieval use of water power, crafts and marked trails. When planning your trip, you can choose between outdoor activities, cultural and historical themes, and a museum experience. The different attractions include the archaeological traces and expansive views in Safjället, the crafts at Gunnebo and the exhibition at Mölndals stadsmuseum. There are also routes of varying lengths through different landscapes. This makes it possible to explore Mölndal according to the interests you want to shape your stay around.
Marked trails and prehistoric traces
Hälsans stig is a marked walking and exercise route, about six kilometres long, through the central parts of Mölndal. As a walking and exercise route, it offers both a chance to get out and about and an opportunity for physical activity; its approximate length gives you a clear indication for planning your own outing.
There is a marked 12-kilometre loop around Lake Rådasjön, roughly twice the distance. Most of it runs along gravel nature trails through deciduous forest close to the lake. The two options therefore differ not only in length but also in their described surroundings: the central parts of Mölndal on the one hand, and a route through woodland near the water on the other.
Safjället has graves dating from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as the remains of a hillfort. With the municipality’s prehistory spanning several thousand years, you can hike there and enjoy expansive views. The succession of periods gives the historical theme a broad time span; the hillfort adds another tangible trace alongside the graves.
Crafts and the history of water power
Gunnebo offers a different historical focus: it is a cultural reserve with unique nature and a living 18th-century setting centred on craftsmanship. Compared with the prehistoric traces in Safjället, the focus here is on a later period and an environment shaped by crafts.
Mölndalsfallen also offers a distinct historical perspective. Water power was already being used there to drive mills in the Middle Ages. This theme is therefore about an early practical use of water power: it drove mills.
Museum and other experiences
The cultural history museum Mölndals stadsmuseum is next to the rapids in Kvarnbyn, an old industrial area. The exhibition “Öppna magasinet” makes engaging with the objects on display a multisensory experience: visitors can feel, hear, smell and try them out. The museum’s theme thus focuses directly on the objects and how they are perceived.
Stora lekbassängen is a play pool for children and adults. As facility details may change, check the latest information before your visit.
There are different options when choosing activities: you can compare the marked trails by length and surroundings, while Safjället, Gunnebo and Mölndalsfallen each offer a different historical perspective. The museum complements these themes with an exhibition where visitors can explore the objects on display using several senses.
