Hamburgsund – Strait, Hamburgö and Coastal Experiences

Hamburgsund combines a distinctive coastal landscape with trails, bathing spots and maritime history. A sea-filled rift valley separates the mainland from Hamburgö. This makes the area particularly suitable for travellers who want to combine coastal nature, outdoor activities and cultural and historical impressions in one destination.

Between Hamburgsund and Hamburgö

The Hamburgsundsleden ferry service runs between Hamburgsund and Hamburgö in northern Bohuslän. The ferry route is 130 metres long, and the crossing takes three minutes. A day trip starting in Hamburgsund leads through the strait between Hamburgsund and Hamburgö by kayak. This makes it possible to experience the separation between the mainland and Hamburgö not only from the shore, but also from the water.

There are two trails available for hiking. The Bergaleden hiking trail follows paths and old roads around Hagberget and offers views of the strait between Hamburgö and the mainland. Another hiking route on Hamburgö leads from the ferry terminal via Vänd igen and the so-called Elefantstigen to Sandvik.

Bathing spots for different days by the water

There are two municipal bathing spots in Hamburgsund and on Hamburgö that are suitable for children. Norra Ejde Pluret in Hamburgsund has sand, a bathing jetty, a car park and a toilet. Boviken on Hamburgö offers sand, a bathing jetty, a diving tower and a toilet. The two sandy bathing spots provide a clear contrast to the bare rocks and hiking-friendly green spaces in the surrounding area.

Local history and maritime traces

Hamburgsund is first mentioned as a customs station as early as 1585. Another distinctive landmark is Hamburgsund kyrka, a wooden church inaugurated in 1915. Its nave has a tower in the southwest and a pentagonal chancel in the northeast. A considerable number of the older houses and boathouses around the Hamburgsund strait have also been preserved.

The maritime past is also reflected in smaller memorial sites. The play ship Nolhôtten at Hjalmars Kaj commemorates the skipper Stellan Johansson and his Nolhôtten. Along the sheltered strait between Hamburgö and the mainland, there were several train-oil factories during the herring period of the 18th century. Together with the preserved boathouses and the ferry service, these features create a local landscape in which the relationship with the water remains visible in various historical forms.

Events and outdoor culture

In summer, Hornbore Ting takes place at the Hornborgs castle ruins as a Viking re-enactment event with an accompanying market. Scen på Bônn is also available for music, entertainment and theatre; it is an open-air stage in an old quarry. Children's theatre weeks have already been held there. The Scen på Bônn association has been responsible for the venue since spring 2010 and aims to offer events and activities there year-round, with a focus on the summer half of the year.
