Tanum: Rock Carvings, World Heritage Walks and Accommodation
Accommodation in Tanum
A stay in Tanum can be planned around the rock carvings in the surrounding World Heritage area. The Bronze Age images offer insights into life and beliefs at the time; the Vitlycke Museum complements them with exhibitions and a reconstructed farmstead. If you are looking for a hotel, holiday home or holiday apartment, compare its actual location with the places you want to visit. Tanum, the individual carving sites and nearby Tanumshede are not interchangeable addresses.
Rock Carvings and the Vitlycke Museum
The Tanum rock carvings are located around the locality. Almost 500 different carvings have been documented at Vitlyckehällen. Another remarkable image in the area is the human figure, more than two metres tall, holding a raised spear and known as Spjutguden. The information available does not establish that this figure is part of Vitlyckehällen or any other panel mentioned here. If you want to see a specific image, check its exact location using visitor information.
The Vitlycke Museum is the visitor centre for the World Heritage Site. It offers exhibitions and a Bronze Age farmstead with reconstructed longhouses, around 3,000 years old, built at a 1:1 scale. The farmstead illustrates how people lived in houses and worked fields alongside their domestic animals. This provides a different way to understand a carving than simply looking at the rock: the museum offers a sense of everyday life at the time, without presenting the images as definitive accounts of specific individuals. Open guided tours that do not require advance booking are available, as well as tours that can be booked. Check current opening hours and tour options when planning your trip.
The paths to the Vitlycke rock carvings have information boards and include steps to make the site accessible. This is not a guarantee that the paths there are step-free. By contrast, the large Litsleby panel is accessible by wheelchair. This specific, site-based information is more useful than a blanket statement that all rock carvings are equally accessible. Choose which panels to visit according to your group’s needs.
World Heritage Walks with Two Possible Sections
The World Heritage walks are six kilometres long and connect the rock-carving areas of Lövåsen, Gerum and Sotetorp. The route can be divided into a northern and a southern section of around three kilometres each. If you want to cover less distance in a day, you can use this division as a guide; the information does not specify walking times or difficulty. There are three rest areas and a viewpoint along the route, with views of the Tanum plain and central parts of the World Heritage area.
Directions to the trail say to follow Road 914 three kilometres south and turn at the “Hällristningar 1” sign. These directions need a specific starting point in the current route description; they should not be understood as three kilometres from your accommodation. Plan your starting point and return route using a current map, especially if you are walking only one of the two sections.
More History in Nearby Tanumshede
Nearby Tanumshede serves as a starting point for visits to the World Heritage area. Its old town centre is protected as a heritage site as a whole; Tanums Gestgiveri is a listed historic building. Sockenmagasinet was built in 1869 after several years of crop failures. The historic Kungsvägen passed Tanumshede and connected Norway, Kungahälla and Copenhagen. These places and traces of the past add to a day spent at the carvings, but they should not be confused with Tanum’s town centre.
There was probably a church in the wider area as early as the 12th century. A later church building was put into use in 1829 and inaugurated the following year. The word “probably” applies to the early history; it should not be taken to mean that an exact medieval founding date is known. Across the wider municipality, the landscape ranges from sea areas and barren coastal strips to forests and small-scale farmland. Hiking, swimming and cycling are also mentioned as activities there. This variety describes the municipality, not the immediate surroundings of every hotel in Tanum.
Choose Accommodation Based on What You Want to Visit
Different starting points may suit a day at the museum, visits to individual accessible carving panels, the full World Heritage walk or an additional stroll in Tanumshede. Compare the exact accommodation address with your destinations, and check services, prices and availability for each listing. The overview of the Tanum region provides more context. The place name alone does not indicate a coastal location or short distances to all the sites mentioned.
