Fjällbacka – Archipelago, bathing spot and maritime history

Fjällbacka brings together an archipelago landscape, granite and maritime history in a compact area. Those choosing the town as a travel destination will find both a bathing spot in the centre and distinctive rocky landscapes, waterways, cultural heritage and opportunities for kayaking and SUP tours.

Between the bathing spot and Vetteberget

The Badholmen bathing spot is located in the centre of Fjällbacka, near Vetteberget and Kungsklyftan. At Badholmen, you can swim from the rocks, a diving board or a diving tower. This makes the spot one of the clearly identifiable destinations for days by the water, without requiring any other characteristics of the bathing spot to be assumed.

Vetteberget is also located in the centre. It can be reached via stairs from Ingrid Bergman Square. From the highest point above Fjällbacka, there is a view of the archipelago and the mainland. Another way to combine the rock and the town is the Vettebergsleden: the circular trail near the town leads up to Vetteberget and around the town.

Kungsklyftan, also known as Ramneklovan, is a 200-metre-long cleft in the granite between Big and Little Vetteberget. Scenes from “Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter” were filmed in this cleft.

Archipelago, boats and guided activities

The Hjärterön archipelago, with Korsön and smaller islands, lies off Fjällbacka. There are many sheltered anchorage and mooring spots for boats. A year-round service in the archipelago is the Ingrid postal boat, Västtrafik route 879. It departs from the jetty at Ingrid Bergman Square in Fjällbacka.

Local history and maritime culture

The connection to the sea is also evident in the townscape and collections. The five-metre-high sculpture Pålarne stands in front of the church in Fjällbacka and is visible both from land and from the sea. The church itself stands on a hill and is clearly visible from the sea.

The Nestorsgården residential building was built in 1849. Nestorsgården preserves local historical items from shipping and fishing, agriculture, crafts and service professions in the Fjällbacka area. The old lantern from the Väderöbod lighthouse is also located there. Bryggdans is still held in Fjällbacka in summer today.

A special culinary history is associated with herring. According to the information available, herring, probably sprat, was caught in the waters off Fjällbacka. The seafarer Gustaf Andersson, who moved there in 1840, founded a herring company in 1842 and began pickling the herring with spices to make anchovies a few years later. This was the first anchovy production in Sweden.
