Åstol – Coastal Rock and Fishing History

Nature

Åstol is a car-free island with white houses standing on barren coastal rock. A long, sheltered bay forms the island’s natural harbor and also provides protection from westerly winds. Beneath the surface, the bedrock consists of volcanic amphibolite. Large trees in Åstol Park create a green space for shade and relaxation. The guest harbor can accommodate up to 75 boats. A memorial grove there commemorates fishermen who lost their lives at sea.

History and Culture

Settlement on Ã…stol began in the mid-18th century during the great herring period. Until the 1960s, Ã…stol was an established fishing village. The Ã…stol Museum presents permanent exhibitions on the local fishing history and the role of women while their husbands were at sea.

The museum also documents the development of the fishing village of Ã…stol from the 18th century to the present day. Texts, images and objects make the changes over several generations comprehensible. Artist talks and music evenings take place in connection with the exhibitions. The gallery hosts four exhibitions in summer. The Ã…stol local heritage group organizes cultural walks on the island.

Bathing and Island Trails

Åstol’s bathing area has a small sandy beach and a children’s section with a water slide. Åstol Park also includes a playground for small children. Toilets are located at the bathing area and by the small boat harbor.

A guided walk around the island can be booked at Åstols Rökeri. The route goes around Åstol and complements Rökeri’s offerings with an accompanied walk through the island and coastal landscape.

Cuisine

Today, Norway lobster, shrimp and, above all, lobster are caught around Åstol. Åstols Rökeri offers seafood buffets and lobster evenings. The local offering thus ranges from the products of fishing to events centered around seafood.

The passenger ferry MS Hakefjord arrives in Åstol from Rönnäng. It arrives in the island’s natural harbor.
