Kyrkesund on Tjörn

Kyrkesund is an old fishing community in northwestern Tjörn. Those looking for a place to stay on Tjörn with a harbour atmosphere, maritime history, a bathing area and access to a nature reserve island will find several different points of interest here. The road to the harbour is lined with white wooden houses and red boat sheds. These buildings were constructed during the herring periods in the 18th and 19th centuries and shape the historic harbour setting.

Maritime history around the harbour

At the southern entrance to Kyrkesund lies “Kålhuvudet”, a tar production facility dating from 1780 that can still be visited. Another historical site is Villa Solfrid. Elin Sundberg, “the gold miner’s daughter”, had the large stone house built in 1916. Today, Villa Solfrid is a museum with period interiors and atmosphere.

A well-known sea mark is also part of the cultural character of the area: Sankt Olovs valar is considered one of the best-known sea marks in Bohuslän. Together with the boat sheds, white wooden houses and historic buildings, it creates a local setting strongly shaped by seafaring, fishing and the former herring periods.

The attractions can be clearly distinguished when choosing what to focus on: In the village, the buildings, herring periods and historical sites take centre stage. Linneviken offers a sandy beach and a floating bathing jetty, while Härön combines a nature reserve with hiking trails of varying lengths. Sankt Olovs valar adds a sea mark to the local history, while Villa Solfrid adds a museum.

Linneviken and the island of Härön

The bathing area at Linneviken has a sandy beach and a floating bathing jetty. The sandy beach slopes gently and is considered suitable for families with children. The bathing area is partially adapted for accessibility; there is also a staircase.

Härön can be reached from Kyrkesund by a ferry crossing of approximately five minutes. The island was declared a nature reserve in 1999 because of its species-rich flora and natural assets. Härön has hiking trails of varying lengths; a hiking map can be purchased on the ferry. Those who wish to take access to an island with nature and hiking opportunities into account when choosing accommodation can therefore combine a stay in Kyrkesund with an excursion to Härön.

Getting there and finding your way around

On the way to Pilane, turn off at Vallhamnskorsningen, following the signs for Kyrkesund. The route passes Kållekärr and continues for another 3 kilometres. At the roundabout, turn right towards Kyrkesund; then follow the road for 4.5 kilometres and turn left at the signs for Pilane and Gravfält. At the entrance to Kyrkesund, there are signposted visitor parking spaces next to the Linneviken bathing area. From there, it is approximately a 10-minute walk to the ferry landing.
