Skärhamn – Harbour, Maritime History and Watercolour Art

Skärhamn combines maritime history with art, beaches and a clearly traceable local history. Harbour and Maritime History

The Skärhamns sjöfartsmuseum has been located in Cherlinska huset since 1977, one of Skärhamn’s oldest houses. The De seglade för Tjörn association presents memories and documentation relating to the island’s maritime history there. Pictures, models, objects and written documents reveal different aspects of this history without limiting it to a single exhibit.

The maritime character reaches further back into the town’s history. During this historical period, Skärhamn’s main source of income was fishing, particularly herring fishing, which was important to the town’s development. In the first half of the 20th century, Skärhamn was Sweden’s largest home port for small cargo ships. Today, the harbour can also be included when finding your way around the town: Skärhamns Gästhamn is located in the centre of Skärhamn, close to shops, restaurants, a grocery store and the beach.

The Skärhamnsvandringen starts at the “De seglade för Tjörn” maritime monument in the harbour of Skärhamn and leads, among other places, to the Sjöfartsmuseet. Its route passes through the oldest part of Skärhamn, climbs up to Hamneberget and then returns around the hill and back through the town. Watercolour Art, Events and Beach

The Nordiska Akvarellmuseet in Skärhamn presents exhibitions from around the world. A visit can be combined with both a practical and a cultural element: in the open studio, visitors can paint for a while. Concerts, stage performances, film screenings and lectures are also held there. In addition to its exhibitions, the museum therefore focuses on a changing programme of events.

Gråskär badplats is located directly next to the Nordiska Akvarellmuseet. The bathing area includes a sandy beach, rocks, a bathing jetty, a diving tower, a beach volleyball court and large grassy areas. Those who want to alternate between maritime culture and a break at the beach when choosing how to spend their stay will find these two different destinations connected to the same location.

Between Skärhamn and Pilane

Outside the immediate museum area, there is also a signposted route between the Nordiska Akvarellmuseet in Skärhamn and Skulptur i Pilane. On the winding route between the museum and the natural surroundings of Skulptur i Pilane, you can cycle, run or walk. The route thus offers several ways of getting around without requiring a specific type of excursion.

Another regular event in the local calendar is Träbåtsfestivalen. It takes place every year on the first weekend of July in the harbour of Skärhamn. When planning a stay, both cultural sites described as permanent attractions and an annual recurring event in the harbour are therefore relevant.
