Stora Dyrön – Hiking between forest, rocks and sea

Stora Dyrön combines a maritime landscape, distinctive hiking trails and a multifaceted island history. You can choose between different experiences: trails cross the island or go all the way around Dyrön, while bathing spots, historical traces and a local guided tour reveal further facets of the area.

Hiking trails between forest, rocks and sea

The blue hiking trail crosses Stora Dyrön from north to south and is 1.6 kilometres long. A longer option is Dyröleden: the trail runs for 5 kilometres all the way around Dyrön. At 1.6 kilometres, the blue trail is considerably shorter than the 5-kilometre Dyröleden; one crosses the island, while the other runs around Dyrön. Along the way, you also reach a narrow gorge between two high rock walls. While hiking, sheltered, lush forest alternates with steep mountains offering sea views. West of Sydhamnen, there is a sauna along the hiking trail that can be rented. This allows you to combine your choice of trail with a special stop without losing sight of the character of the landscape. Local guided tours of Dyrön last about two hours and can be booked year-round. The guided tour complements independent hiking with an organised tour of the island.

Bathing spots and their features

The Hala bathing spot at Sydhamnen has a small sandy beach, a bathing jetty and a three-metre diving tower. Dyröns badplats also has a small sandy beach, bathing jetties and rocks. The bathing spot is partly accessible with reduced barriers via a wide staircase that slopes gently down towards the water. In addition, the Dyröns samhällsförening organises a swimming school there.

Traces of a long island history

In the northeast of Stora Dyrön, there are pillow lava formations that are considered unique in Sweden. The pillow lava formations in the northeast are therefore located in a different part of the island from the finds in the west. In the west are the remains of a Stone Age settlement and a Bronze Age burial mound. Stora Dyrön was first settled more than 3,000 years ago. The small Minnenas Bod museum presents, among other things, school materials, newspaper clippings, photographs and books about life on Dyrön in the past in a permanent exhibition. Another precisely dated chapter in the area’s history is 2 September 1743: on that day, Dyrön was bought back from the Crown by two farmers.

Getting there and finding your way around

A passenger ferry runs from the landing stage in Rönnäng to Dyrön. In addition, Gunnars Båtturer operates Västtrafik route 326 year-round between Dyrön Södra, Rökan and Rörtången, as well as in the opposite direction. Stora Dyrön also has an ICA shop that is open year-round.
