Klövedal – Nature Trails, Archipelago Views and Culture

If you would like to combine nature, the coast and culture on your trip, Klövedal offers several clearly distinct focal points: circular walks, nature reserves, archipelago views, historical traces and contemporary art. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore especially worth considering which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.

Hiking between Säby and the Coast

The Säbyleden trail starts at Säbygården and runs as a circular trail through open landscapes, pastures and woodland. You can choose between a 6-kilometre route to the old stone hut and back, or a shorter 4-kilometre option. The shorter route does not include the detour to the stone hut. The trail passes through deciduous woodland, wet meadows, seashore, scrubland and grassland and is marked with a discreet orange trail marker.

The starting point itself is also of cultural and historical interest: Säbygården is a large farm dating from the early 19th century and one of the best-preserved buildings of its type in Bohuslän. A cycle path also runs through Säby, connecting Brevik with the Pilane burial ground.

Natural Landscape with Views of the Stigfjord

The Björshuvudet nature reserve covers areas in Björshuvudet, Halsbäck, Klövedal, Önneröd, Kolleröd, Vik and Toröd. Its landscape includes deciduous woodland, pastures, coastal meadows and nutrient-rich fens. To the north, the area is surrounded by the salt water of the Stigfjord. From the rocky outcrops, you can look out over the archipelago landscape of the Stigfjord. Those who give greater priority to nature experiences and open coastal views when choosing a location, rather than a purely cultural route, will find a distinctly different focus here from the Säbyleden.

Pilane: Burial Ground, Art and Guided Tours

Pilane is an 8-hectare natural and cultural landscape with rocks and valleys, thousands of years of historical remains and contemporary artworks. The Pilane burial ground is an archaeological site open to visitors. Guided tours lasting around 90 minutes are offered at Pilane and must be booked in advance. This requirement affects how the visit is planned: anyone wishing to join the tour should schedule it as a separate activity rather than simply treating it as a spontaneous walk.

At the entrance to Pilane, the café serves pastries, coffee, other drinks and ice cream.

Culture in Klövedal

Guided tours of Villa Solfrid are offered in Klövedal, where you can learn about the history of the gold miner’s daughter Elin Sundberg. At the age of 36, Elin Sundberg had Villa Solfrid built, a castle-like stone house on a barren moorland near her parents’ farm, Rusmut, in Västra Sunna on Tjörn.

Klövedal Church also has its own historical feature: its bridal crown is made of gilded silver. A service is held at Klövedal Church every Sunday. Another tangible trace of the past is the rock carving in Klövedal. It depicts 13 ships and around 10 cup marks. Together with Villa Solfrid and the church, this creates a cultural programme made up of very different individual themes rather than being limited to a single attraction.

Sandy Beach and Further Location Choices

If the coastal aspect is your main priority, Ängevikens badplats has a sandy beach, a grassy area and a jetty running along the rocks.
