Domsjö: Beach, Archaeology and Local History
Shallow-sloping water and an approximately 4 km-long ice track
Nyängets havsbad has shallow-sloping water and is child-friendly. The shallow water is therefore just as much a feature of the bathing area as its child-friendly character. Another local feature is the Nyänget and Bäckfjärden ice track. It is an approximately 4 km-long circular route between Nyängets havsbad and Sommarhemmet (IOGT/NTO). The route connects the bathing area with Sommarhemmet and, with its approximate length, forms a distinctive feature of the locality. The child-friendly character applies to the bathing area, not to the ice track. At approximately 4 km, the length of the route remains an estimate. Shallow-sloping water and child-friendliness characterize the bathing area; the ice track is defined by its approximate length and the route between two locations.
Bronze Age burial cairn and open-air archaeological museum
On Westmansberget there is a Bronze Age burial cairn made of rounded beach stones. A burial cairn is a stone burial site built up in layers; in Domsjö, it consists of rounded beach stones. An archaeological reconstruction stands at Genesmon. It is based on the findings from the excavation site, which can be reached on foot. The Genesmon open-air archaeological museum is closed off until further notice. At Genesmon, the reconstruction and the excavation site accessible on foot are associated with each other, while the closure applies to the open-air museum. The burial cairn and Genesmon thus represent two different forms of archaeology: a Bronze Age burial site and a reconstruction.
Domsjö kyrka as a protected building
Domsjö kyrka was built in 1966 as a large, enclosed complex of red brick masonry. As a district church, it belongs to the local ecclesiastical history within Själevad Parish. It was built through a donation from Mo&Domsjö AB and designed by Stockholm architect Hakon Ahlberg. In addition, the church is classified as CULTURAL_OBJECT in the category “protected and valuable buildings”. The enclosed complex describes the overall structure, while the red brick masonry identifies its principal building material. The classification refers to its architectural designation, not to its ecclesiastical function within Själevad Parish.
From steam sawmill to pulp industry
The industrial history of Domsjö began in 1865 with the construction of a steam sawmill. From the beginning of the 20th century, a pulp industry developed in Domsjö. The sawmill was thus followed by a later industrial specialization. The sequence in time extends from the steam sawmill of 1865 to the development of the pulp industry from the beginning of the 20th century. Both developments are part of the local economic history and mark different phases of its industry. The information about the pulp industry indicates the beginning of its development, not a single year of establishment.
