Ulvöhamn

Ulvöhamn combines maritime history with a coastal landscape on Ulvön. If you want to choose between culture and active days during your trip, you will find both here in clearly distinct experiences: Ulvö Museum brings the development of the fishing community to life, while the Ulvöleden connects cliffs, woodland sections, fishermen’s huts and sea views.

Fishing History at Ulvö Museum

The main site of Ulvö Museum presents the development of the fishing community of Ulvöhamn from the 16th century to the present day. The site includes a smokehouse, a boathouse and a drying ground. The museum therefore shows not only individual objects, but also several elements of the historic setting. In 1810, Ulvöhamn had 35 boathouses. The first of these boathouses were built by farmers. By the 1850s, Ulvöhamn already had an established year-round settlement of professional fishermen.

The museum is also a visitor centre for the cultural heritage of the Ulvö Islands. In summer, daily guided tours may be available. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with a deeper examination of the development of the area, without reducing its history to a single building.

Chapel and Pilot Museum

Another focal point is Ulvö gamla kapell. The chapel was built in 1622 and has well-preserved wall and ceiling paintings signed by Roland Johansson Öberg in 1719. The building can be booked for weddings, christenings and funerals, both in religious and civil forms.

The history of seafaring also includes Lotsstugan, which houses a small pilot museum. In summer, it is open to visitors during certain opening hours. From the summit of Lotsberget, visitors can gain insight into the history of the pilots; the summit also offers panoramic views over Ulvöhamn and the archipelago.

Ulvöleden and Lotsberget

Ulvöleden is an approximately 25-kilometre hiking trail around Ulvön. The route passes through a coastal landscape with cliffs, woodland sections, fishermen’s huts and sea views. If you do not want to follow the entire route, Ulvöleden can be shortened or extended via other paths and roads. From Ulvöhamn, you can reach Lotsberget via the long staircase known as Lotstrappan or by a path on the rear side of the mountain. This provides two differently described approaches to the same viewpoint.

Getting There Without a Car

Ulvön can be reached by ferry from Docksta, Ullånger and Köpmanholmen. As none of the ferries carries cars, you cannot take a car to Ulvön. This is relevant when choosing your accommodation and planning your trip: Ulvöhamn can be reached via several ferry connections, but continuing the journey on the island with your own car is not possible.
