Slussfors: Nature, Water and Trails
Accommodation in Slussfors
Slussfors combines waterscapes, hiking trails, cross-country skiing and local history to create a diverse travel destination.
Water and Fishing Areas Around Slussfors
The fishing area in the upper part of Lake Storuman stretches from Slussfors to Forsnacken. This makes the lake one of the defining landscape features of the area. Another fishing area is located along the Kirjesån. It stretches from the lower bridge to the upper part of Lower Lumnien. Those who want to include fishing in their travel plans can consider these two areas as separate focal points without combining them into one continuous route.
For days spent swimming, Slussfors badplats is a designated bathing place in Storumans kommun municipality. Together with the fishing areas, this creates a clear connection to the water, which may be just as interesting for choosing your destination as the trails and nature experiences on land.
Kirjesålandet and the Kirjeså Trail
Kirjesålandet is located about 8 km north of the village of Slussfors along the Blue Highway (E12). The area covers 17,000 hectares and is part of the Vindelälven Nature Reserve. Kirjesålandet offers hikes through primeval forests with trees that are 300 to 600 years old. The size of the area and the great age of the trees give this nature experience its own distinctive character.
The Kirjeså Trail offers two routes for adults, measuring 7.5 km and 14.5 km, as well as a 2 km children's route for children up to 12 years old. The shorter 7.5 km route runs along one side of the Kirjesån, while the longer 14.5 km route follows both sides of the Kirjesån. You can therefore plan your day around your preferred route length and the route's proximity to the water. For families, the children's route is a separate, clearly designated part of the trail; adults have two different-length options.
Cross-Country Skiing and Local History
Slussfors has cross-country ski tracks operated by local clubs. If you would also like to explore the area during the colder season, these tracks are among the local offerings to consider when planning your trip.
The history of the area includes Slussfors Adventkyrka. It was built from a wooden house moved from Umnäs to Slussfors in 1940. About 20 years later, the church was expanded for the first time by adding a barracks from Aujaur. Its construction history thus connects several local places and makes the church an independent cultural topic during your stay.
Another local landmark is the Esso Nostalgimack. It is located in Slussfors directly next to the village shop.
Choosing Slussfors as Your Destination
Before choosing your accommodation, you can first decide on your personal focus: water and fishing, the bathing place, a hike in Kirjesålandet, the Kirjeså Trail, cross-country skiing or local history. The specific route distances help you decide between the 7.5 km and 14.5 km options; the 2 km route is intended for children up to 12 years old. This keeps Slussfors easy to navigate as a destination, while the different themes leave plenty of scope for individual day planning.
