Storuman between lakes, ski trails and Sámi culture

Storuman Municipality combines mountain, forest and lake landscapes with opportunities for outdoor activities all year round, in summer and winter. Short and longer routes, seasonal experiences, and cultural and natural sites stand alongside one another; you can organize the highlights by route, season and activity.

Nature between forest and water

In Storuman Municipality, more than 2,400 lakes and the Ume River offer numerous opportunities for fishing all year round. In Storuman Lapland, you can fish independently or hire a fishing guide.

The old bridge in Stensele lies along the former route of Vilhelminavägen and is a birdwatching site on the Ume River that is particularly worth a stop from April to May. Naturum Vindelfjällen in Hemavan provides information about hiking trails, guided tours, exhibitions, maps and souvenirs.

Trails and winter routes

Two illuminated ski trails, four and six kilometers long, start at Storuman's ski stadium. In total, there are about 14 kilometers of groomed, illuminated ski trails on Stenseleberget between Storuman and Stensele.

The winter trail along Lake Uman runs along the lake's ice edge in late winter and leads approximately 13 kilometers from Storuman toward Laisbäck. Drottningleden is a nine-kilometer-long, relatively easy hiking trail between Laisaliden and Hemavan, with views of Norwegian peaks and glaciers.

In summer, the six-kilometer Kyrkstigen trail from Storuman to Stensele Church is easy to walk; it runs partly along boardwalks, but the trail is not accessible. The waterfront promenade runs along the shore of Luspviken, where the town of Storuman is located, and partly follows boardwalks through the forest.

There are three easily accessible viewpoints in the vicinity of Storuman: Kyrkberget, Forsviksberget and Utsikten. Maps and information are available, and a guided tour is also offered through the hotel.

Culture and history

Stensele Church is one of Sweden's largest wooden churches; its nickname is “the Cathedral of Lappmarken.” Atoklimpen is a Sámi cultural landscape that shows how nomadic reindeer-herding communities have used the landscape from prehistoric times to the present day.

Atoklimpen includes a nearly nine-kilometer circular trail with several information boards. At Atostugan by Risbäcken, there is also an accessible picnic area.

The Järnvägshotellet in Storuman is the best-preserved railway hotel in the district. The façades facing the railway grounds are still in the condition they were in during the 1930s; in 1979, the building was converted into a library.

The dining rooms, staircase hall and corridors of the former railway hotel have remained unchanged, and some furniture from its hotel days is still there. A guided tour of the building can be booked; alternatively, you can explore its history independently using written information.

Hembygdsgården on Luspholmarna includes a museum with older local objects as well as historic buildings maintained by the local heritage association. The museum in Umnäs presents Sámi culture and settler culture, a school museum exhibition and old photographs.

A museum is located in the town's old school, built in 1905, and mainly displays objects from the surrounding area.

On the move, by the water and in town

The Inlandsbanan train stops in the center of Storuman; activities, restaurants and nature, as well as hotels and a campsite, are within walking distance. The E12, also known as Blå vägen, runs from Umeå along the Ume River via Storuman and Hemavan-Tärnaby, continuing to Mo i Rana and Nesna on the Atlantic coast.

Umanbacken has three runs, a lift and a children's slope. At the bathing area, there is a diving tower, seating, a circular route of approximately one kilometer, as well as beach volleyball, disc golf, an outdoor gym, a boules court and an accessible ramp.

A seasonal fika offering in a special setting serves locally produced products, including toffee and toffee sauce. It is open in summer and at certain times during winter.

A simple walking trail on the north side of Gunnarbäcken is also well suited to cross-country cycling.
