Åskilje – Church, Rivers and Ski Trails
Accommodation in Åskilje
Åskilje offers three distinct points of interest for planning a trip: river scenery and fly-fishing, architectural history, and cross-country skiing. Near Åskilje, the Juktån flows into the Umeälven; the church was inaugurated in 1928, and Åskilje has ski trails maintained by a local association. Its location on the E12 between Lycksele and Storuman adds regional context to these local attractions. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which focus matters most for your stay.
The Juktån, Umeälven and Buberget
The Juktån rises in the mountains between Tärnaby and Ammarnäs, in Lake Överst-Juktan, and then flows southeast to its confluence with the Umeälven near Åskilje. The river is considered a classic fly-fishing destination. If this type of fishing is a focus of your trip, the Juktån is a specific point of interest; check local fishing regulations and access before visiting. The Buberget Nature Reserve is another nearby destination and can be reached from the E12 at Åskilje. This makes it possible to consider the Juktån, whose confluence is near Åskilje, and the nearby reserve as distinct ways to explore nature.
Åskilje Church and its architectural history
Construction of Åskilje Church began in 1925 and was completed in 1927–1928; the church was inaugurated in 1928. It was originally designed as a simple chapel, with a rectangular nave, a lower and narrower entrance porch to the northwest, and a small sacristy to the east. The nave forms the rectangular main section; the porch and sacristy extended the floor plan on different sides. After the porch was demolished, a bell tower was added to the northwest in 1936. The plans were drawn up by architect Einar Lundberg of the Swedish building administration. The building history thus distinguishes the original chapel form from the later alteration; construction began, completion, inauguration and the addition of the tower mark separate stages.
Ski trails as a winter focus
Ski trails maintained by a local association give Åskilje a focus for winter activities. If you want cross-country skiing to be a central part of your stay, this offers a different starting point for planning than the historic church or the Juktån as a fly-fishing destination. You can treat these interests as separate criteria when choosing where to stay: culture, rivers and winter sports each offer a different focus.
Accommodation and regional information
Åskilje Camping & lodge has 34 camping pitches with electricity. For the eastern area from Åskilje to Umnäs, tourist information is available at Storumans Camping. These details help with different questions: the camping pitches refer to a specific accommodation option, while the tourist information covers a larger regional area. If your plans extend beyond Åskilje, this regional remit may help you find your way around.
