Storuman offers different ways to enjoy active days: trails marked by kilometre, activities at Badsjön, a historic church path and illuminated cross-country ski trails. There is also the museum in Luspholmarna, fishing waters near the town centre and a statue on the Blue Highway. For planning your trip, the type of activity and the season are particularly useful points of reference.

Trails and viewpoints

On Hälsans stig, a sign marks each kilometre; there are five benches along the trail. The surface is suitable for walkers, pushchairs and wheelchairs. If you consider the surface when choosing a route, you’ll find a trail explicitly described as suitable for these three groups.

Utsikten is the highest point in Storuman’s built-up area. It has a wooden observation tower, benches and a barbecue area. There are parking bays along the road to Utsikten, and ample parking at the top. Parking is therefore available both along the road and at the upper area.

Badsjön, Kyrkstigen and fishing

Badsjön has a swimming area with a diving tower. A trail about 1 kilometre long runs around the lake. You can also play disc golf around the lake; the course is suitable for both beginners and more challenging play. Swimming, a walk around the lake and disc golf offer different ways to enjoy the same body of water.

The trail around Badsjön, at about 1 kilometre, is much shorter than the 6-kilometre Kyrkstigen. The historic church path begins about 1 kilometre north of Storuman, by the E45. It was formerly used to fulfil the obligation to attend church. A circuit around the lake and a longer path with a historic function therefore suit different interests.

Many fishing waters are close to the town centre and the railway station. If you’re including fishing in your trip plans, both are useful reference points for getting your bearings.

Museum, bakery and a distinctive landmark

The local museum in Luspholmarna houses old artefacts and an old bakery that is still in use. You can reach the museum on foot, by bicycle or by canoe. These modes of transport give you different ways to include a museum visit in your plans.

There is a bakery hut at the Luspholmarna heritage site. In summer, authentic northern Swedish flatbread is baked and sold there in a wood-fired oven. If you’re particularly interested in this bread, take the seasonal information into account when planning your trip. The waters around the Luspholmarna heritage building also offer opportunities for swimming.

The statue of the “Wild Man of Storuman” stands beside the Blue Highway, the E12/E45. Its red colour symbolises the indomitable strength of the people of Lapland. The landmark therefore has an explicitly stated symbolic meaning as well as a location.

Cross-country skiing, excursions and getting there

Two illuminated cross-country ski trails, 4 and 6 kilometres long, start at Storuman’s ski stadium. There is also a 1-kilometre sprint course. The two trails differ in length by 2 kilometres; the sprint course is shorter than both.

Forsviksberget is in the area around Storuman and has a steep, well-trodden ridge trail. Sturdy footwear is recommended. If you’re considering this excursion, bear in mind both the described trail conditions and the equipment recommendation.

Storuman can be reached by car, bus and plane; in summer, you can also travel by train on the Inlandsbanan. If you’re travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel dates. This seasonal train option can be taken into account when choosing when to travel.
