Lunderskov: Mill, Mølleå and Historic Trails

Anyone wishing to combine nature trails, landscapes and regional history in Lunderskov will find a particularly diverse area around Drabæks Mølle. The mill is located in a green oasis in the middle of Lunderskov and was established as a royal watermill in 1553. It is considered Denmark’s oldest commercial enterprise. However, the claim that it has operated since around 1100 under the same name is not documented.

Green Landscapes by the Water

The landscape around Drabæks Mølledam is characterised by moraine hills and a deeply cut valley through which the Drabæks Mølleå flows. The green meadows along the Drabæks Mølleå form an important biotope in the local area. Kingfishers breed along the river. The surroundings are therefore shaped not only by water and landforms, but also by a specific habitat that you can experience attentively on a walk.

The 41-hectare area around Drabæks Mølle was placed under protection in 1972. At Drabæks Møllesø, the picnic tables invite you to enjoy a picnic. You can also walk all the way around Drabæks Mølledam. This makes it possible to combine different interests, from a short break by the water to a longer exploration of the landscape.

The water landscape near Hvidkilde also has its own distinctive features: A spring near Hvidkilde flows through a carp pond and then through eight fishponds. At the southern end of Drabæks Mølledam stands Hvidkilde Manor, built in 1913. Lunderskov is also home to 16 preserved burial mounds, while Skanderup Church, located just outside the town, was built more than 800 years ago.

Walking and Cycling in Lunderskov

The Isfugleruten is a marked walking trail approximately 3 km long that begins at Drabæks Møllesø. It follows Lunderskov’s historic lakes and waterways. When navigating, you should take the varying trail conditions into account: The route runs partly along wide paths and partly along narrow ones. In some places it is easily accessible, while the hilly terrain is more challenging elsewhere.

For longer cycling tours, the 29.5 km scenic and historic Middelalderruten passes through Lunderskov. The route follows minor country roads and forest tracks and originates from Hærvejen, the old cattle-driving route from Jutland to Europe. In Lunderskov, this places both a short walk around the water and a considerably longer cycling route with historical connections at the centre of travel planning.

Art and Craft History

MÆRKværdig is an art workshop and gallery in Lunderskov run by artist Lisbet Thorøe Larsen. Old objects with history and patina are transformed there into sculptural collages known as assemblages. Visits to the workshop and gallery can be arranged by phone, SMS or email.

There is also a specific way to orient yourself when travelling there: Lunderskov can be reached by train, and Drabæks Mølle is 700 m from the station via Møllegade.
