Five farms still lie within Frørup’s village signs. From 1864 to 1920, the village’s fields formed the border with Denmark. Together, the farms and the former border location shape the village’s history. Frørup and its surroundings also offer good opportunities for walks.

Farms and Border History

One of the five farms is a striking manor farm. Frørup experienced a special period of prosperity while it belonged to Germany, from 1864 to 1920. During the same period, Frørup’s fields formed the border with Denmark. The farm’s history and the border location thus fall within the same decades, but describe different aspects of the village’s history. Frørup still has places that recall the time when the village was a borderland. A reunification stone was erected in 1945; its date falls after the end of the stated border period and provides a later point of reference.

The Church and the Village’s Earlier History

Frørup Kirke is a Romanesque parish church on the northeastern edge of the village. Its location provides a clear geographical landmark; as a religious building, it offers a different focus from the farms and reminders of the borderland period. Many of Frørup’s present-day detached houses have a history as village mills, inns, general stores or similar former establishments. The historical perspective therefore extends from farms and the church to places that once served everyday needs. The different building and usage histories show different sides of the village.

Celebrations in the Village

Frørup og Omegns Borgerforening organizes events in Frørup, including St John’s Eve celebrations. Dates and details may vary, so check before your trip whether any specific events fit your plans.

Walks and Landscape

Frørup and its surroundings offer good opportunities for walks. The landscape around Frørup and Frøruprød forms a relatively flat, low-lying central area at an elevation of about 50 m. Frørup is also close to a forest. While the elevation refers to the central area around both villages, the proximity to a forest refers to Frørup. If you would like to include time on foot in your travel plans, you can make walks a focus alongside the village’s history.

Location and Practical Information

Frørup lies northwest of Christiansfeld and east of the somewhat larger village of Stepping. The recently realigned country road between Christiansfeld and Stepping runs through Frørup Parish. Bus services in the area are listed as running hourly at Høkkelbjerg or in Christiansfeld. Check the current timetable before travelling.

When choosing a destination, you can combine different interests: border and architectural history offer a cultural perspective, while walks and proximity to a forest offer a focus on the landscape. Both interests can be included in your plans.
