Castle history and cultural experiences

At Koldinghus, you can experience the architecture and dramatic stories of the castle. You can also view the Flora Danica dinner service there. Staldgården is also part of the historical dimension: the building served for several hundred years as a stable for royal horses, for the Holstein Lancer Regiment and for training young army horses. In Staldgården, Cell II is the only cell preserved in Denmark. Three cinematic narratives use light, sound and modern technology to convey the history of Staldgården and Kolding during the occupation.

Art, design and Kolding craftsmanship

Trapholt, a museum of modern art, crafts and design, is located on Kolding Fjord. The grounds include a large sculpture park featuring works by contemporary Danish artists. Trapholt also displays Arne Jacobsen’s Kubeflex summer house, furnished with his own designs. The museum spaces, outdoor art and architecture thus offer different ways of experiencing Kolding’s cultural landscape.

The Kyster & Sølvet exhibition tells the story of Danish silver created in Kolding through the works of the goldsmith Holger Kyster. The works were created in collaboration with Thorvald Bindesbøll and Svend Hammershøi. Made In Kolding focuses on companies and products created in Kolding from the end of the 19th century to the present day. In one room, visitors can use Bilofix to build cranes, cars, houses and flowers.

City centre and family time

In the heart of Kolding stands Nicolai, a cultural centre comprising five independent buildings that also functions as a cultural unit. Nicolai for børn is a 1,300 m² children’s cultural centre with active and creative experiences for the whole family, kindergarten groups and school classes. Every year, Nicolai for børn holds a Constitution Day celebration for children in Legeparken. The park is located near Kolding city centre and offers a large playground, a green space, Mooncars and pedal boats.

Gardens, trails and protected nature

At Geografisk Have, trees, shrubs and herbs are arranged according to their geographical origin. There, you can walk through plant worlds from Japan, North America, China and Europe. Aksel Olsen founded the garden in 1918; today, Geografisk Have preserves around 2,000 species out of more than 6,000 species tested. The 1.8-kilometre Hjertesti runs through the garden, while birdsong and abundant wildlife accompany visitors.

Hylkedalen borders the southwestern part of Kolding towards the open countryside and comprises protected natural areas, especially dry grasslands and woodland. The area offers a continuous cycling route, several recreational hiking trails close to the outskirts of the city and a climbing park. One trail runs from Kolding city centre through the wooded Marielunddal, which is to be placed under protection.

Getting to Kolding

For arriving in Kolding, Kolding railway station is a useful point of reference: InterCity, InterCityLyn and regional trains provide connections to Jutland, Funen and Zealand. The station is accessible via stairs and a lift and offers parking for cars and bicycles.
