Vamdrup brings together the history of a border railway town with routes and places along the Kongeå. The central area is designated as a conservation-worthy cultural heritage area. The town’s border history, routes through the river landscape, and local amenities offer different points of reference when planning your trip.

Border History in the Town Centre

Vamdrup’s history as a border railway town is an important point of reference for the designated cultural heritage area. The Kongeåstien trail also runs through a historic borderland whose history dates back to the 13th century. Those interested in the development of the border will find a specific connection to the topic at the Kongeåmuseet: it is located in the former stationmaster’s residence.

The permanent exhibition at the Kongeåmuseet covers the national border and the former customs borders between Jutland and Schleswig. Another architectural detail can be found at Vamdrup Kirke: its south portal has a four-column entrance with decorated column capitals. Vamdrup thus brings together different historical themes: its border and railway history, as well as the architecture of the church portal.

Walking or Cycling Along the Kongeå

For a walking tour, stages 9 and 10 of the Kongeåstien trail pass through Vamdrup, from Benbækken to the source of the Kongeå east of town. The route connects a stay in town with the historic borderland through which the Kongeåstien runs. No specific route length or walking time is given here for these stages, so plan your day according to your own itinerary.

As a cycling option, the cultural heritage route R64 Kongeådalen runs from Kolding to Vamdrup and on to the Jels Lakes. In Vamdrup, it crosses the Kongeå. The two routes therefore differ in their focus: the Kongeåstien is defined by its walking stages, while R64 is a cycling route connecting several named places. When choosing between walking and cycling, both the type of tour and its listed stops are relevant.

River Landscape and Picnic Spots

The source of the Kongeå lies in the scrubland near Gåskær, southeast of Vamdrup; it springs from the edge of a field 400 metres north of Farrislund farm. Parking is available for the walk to the source on Farrisvej, between house numbers 37 and 39 in Vamdrup. There is also a car park at Farris Bridge; from there, the path to the source follows Farris Bæk. These details offer several points of reference for exploring the river and its surroundings.

At Vamdrup Åsted on the Kongeå, tables and benches are available for a picnic. The site is right beside the paved path between Enghaven and Kongeåparken. Visitors can also try using an Archimedes screw to draw water up from the Kongeå. Green corridors along the Kongeå and Vamdrup Å extend into the town centre; paths connect schools, sports facilities, and residential areas with the town centre.

Leisure and Getting Around Town

For a break with children, Legepladsen i Margretelund in Vamdrup has a picnic shelter. Those out with a dog will find a 3,000-square-metre fenced woodland area at Vamdrup Hundeskov. Dogs may run free there under their owners’ supervision; check the rules in force before your trip.

Kongeå Badet offers opportunities for water play and swimming practice. Its facilities include a 25-metre pool with six lanes and a 1.30-metre-deep warm-water pool. If swimming is part of your plans, check the operating details before your visit.

There is also a specific point of reference for getting to Vamdrup: InterCity and InterCityLyn trains run from Vamdrup Station. Since train services operate according to a timetable, it is advisable to check the latest departure times. Vores Hus is accessible every day of the week if you scan a physical or digital health card at the entrance; registration as a library user is not required. Check the access requirements again before your visit.
