Frydenborg on the Little Belt: Coast, Forests and Fishing Settlement

Frydenborg is a small fishing settlement on the Little Belt on the Stenderup Peninsula. For a trip combining coastal landscapes, nature observation and maritime history, the focus here is on the interplay between forest, water and the settlement pattern. Coast and landscape on the Little Belt

The location at Frydenborgvej 18 lies within the Lillebælt Natura 2000 site (SAC96) and in the coastal landscape of the Stenderup Peninsula. Views across the Little Belt and the relationship with the coast are central to the character and perception of the landscape. Sønderskov lies on the southern edge of Frydenborg; it extends to the coast and includes deciduous and beech forest, raised bog as well as heathland and bog areas with birch and spruce. Lyngmosen raised bog is also located in Sønderskov and is primarily covered with birch and Sitka spruce.

In the Stenderup Forests, there are opportunities to observe white-tailed eagles and marsh harriers, as well as spot harbour porpoises in the Little Belt. There are also five marked hiking routes in the vicinity of Frydenborg, ranging from 3 to 7 km in length. The different route lengths make it easier to compare the options for planning your own day.

Hiking, cycling and breaks by the water

The marked 33.7 km cycling route Vandvejen runs across the Stenderup Peninsula, through the Stenderup Forests and along the coast of the Little Belt. There are eight different car parks in the Stenderup Forests for visits to the natural area. In Sønderskov, there is a picnic and fire site on the beach with views of the Little Belt, Funen and possibly Brandsø on the horizon.

Frydenborg Huse and its history

Frydenborg’s settlement pattern is connected with Frydenborg Huse. Originally, Frydenborg was a house on the parish land within Sønder Stenderup. After the fire in Sønder Stenderup in 1807, the house was moved to a plot belonging to the parish land outside the village and later became the small settlement of Frydenborg Huse. Several houses there were built as semi-detached houses; Frydenborg Huse includes both thatched-roof houses and houses with tiled roofs.

The residents of Frydenborg Huse were primarily day labourers and fishermen. Frydenborg Huse is part of a coastal environment consisting of fishermen’s houses and smallholdings. In southern Sønderskov lies Husvold, a small rampart site on the southern edge of Frydenborg. The ramparts of Husvold enclose an area measuring approximately 80 by 50 metres.
