Vollsjö combines literary traces with a hilly agricultural landscape. Those looking to combine cultural discoveries, local history and paths through a distinctive landscape on their trip will find several distinct points of interest here. The Pirate Museum, Vollsjö Church and the Pirate Walk lead to different sides of the town, without requiring them to form a single sightseeing itinerary.

In the Footsteps of Fritiof Nilsson Piraten

Since 1998, the Pirate Museum has been housed in an old railway gatekeeper’s cottage in Vollsjö. In the museum park is the sculpture group “Saga väves på sanningens varp”, featuring Piraten, Bombi Bitt, Eli and the cat Skorpan. This means that the town’s literary connection is not limited to books but is also reflected in a tangible display in the museum park.

Those who wish to explore Vollsjö on foot while taking in literary references can include the Pirate Walk through the town in their travel plans. It passes seven signs equipped with QR codes. Pumphuset is also one of the places in Vollsjö known from Fritiof Nilsson Piraten’s books. Pumphuset can be reached on foot from the Pirate Museum. The two places can therefore be considered different stops on a culturally focused visit to the town, without requiring a specific length of stay.

In Fritiof Nilsson Piraten’s books, Vollsjö is also called Tosterup, Grimsby and Gyllevad. Wollsjö säteri in Vollsjö provides another literary connection: in the novel “Bock i örtagård”, the place is associated with the estate of Gottorp. Visitors interested in literature and its connections to specific places can thus gain an insight that extends beyond individual attractions.

Church and Local History

Vollsjö Church was originally a chapel dating from around the beginning of the 13th century, or possibly from the end of the 12th century. The church contains a Renaissance tombstone from the 16th century depicting an almost life-size skeleton. The church also appears in Fritiof Nilsson Piraten’s book “Bombi Bitt och jag” and in the film adaptation of the same name. The church is therefore at once a historic landmark, a place with a distinctive artistic detail and part of the literary heritage surrounding Vollsjö.

The town’s development in connection with the railway is also of interest for orientation purposes. When the railway was built in 1866, Vollsjö’s station settlement developed north of the old town centre. It grew up around the market square, approximately 500 metres from the railway station. This local history makes it possible to view Vollsjö not only through individual names from literature but also through the development of its settlement structure.

Landscape and Travel Character

The Fränninge-Vollsjö area lies in a hilly agricultural landscape crossed by the Vollsjöån. The Vollsjöån runs west of Vollsjö. When choosing accommodation, those who value a culturally oriented base as well as a connection to the local landscape can weigh these two aspects separately when planning their trip: the literary sites and the church represent history and culture, while the river and agricultural landscape define the area’s character.

If you would like to expand your search to include other destinations, you can also find Fränninge, Äsperöd, Sjöbo, Lövestad, Sövde and Blentarp here. For Vollsjö itself, it is worth planning your trip around a chosen focus in advance: literary traces, historic church art, local history or the landscape around the Vollsjöån.
