Löddeköpinge between the Viking Age and coastal trails

Löddeköpinge combines documented Viking history with varied routes through farmland, nature reserves and coastal landscapes. If you want to choose between culture, nature and maritime orientation for your trip, the town offers several clearly distinct points of interest: historic buildings, archaeological traces, an open-air museum and two Skåneleden stages with different landscape characteristics.

Church and historic traces in the town

One important historic building is Löddeköpinge Church. Its nave and chancel are Romanesque; the tower was probably built in the late Middle Ages. The chancel vault contains remnants of symbols representing the Evangelists from the 15th century. The furnishings also include a pulpit that probably dates from the 17th century. It is decorated with alabaster reliefs that probably originated in Holland. The repeated qualifications of probability are part of the historical classification and should not be read as confirmed dating or provenance.

Löddeköpinge was one of the major trading sites of the Viking Age to have been extensively archaeologically investigated. Today, only remains of a defensive embankment are visible at the Viking-Age marketplace. Archaeological investigations have also uncovered remains of a Viking-Age settlement beneath present-day Löddeköpinge, including pit houses and graves. These traces make the town particularly interesting if you want to explore history not only through individual buildings but also through the development of a settlement area.

VikingaTider and the history of the landscape

VikingaTider is an archaeological open-air museum in Löddeköpinge, Skåne, focusing on the Viking Age and the Early Middle Ages. Based on finds from the surrounding area, VikingaTider reconstructs a Viking-Age landscape with farms, animals, fields, wetlands, craft workshops and a large feasting hall. This means that the focus is not only on individual artefacts but also on the spatial relationships between housing, agriculture, crafts and community.

Another historical point of reference is the old transformer station. It was commissioned in 1910 to supply Löddeköpinge with electricity. Galleri Transformatorn hosts exhibitions and member activities every year. In this way, Löddeköpinge brings together archaeological, church-historical and more recent local history without requiring the individual sites to be grouped into a single period.

Walking trails between fields, woodland and coast

For active days, two different sections of the Skåneleden are the main options. Stage 11 runs from Löddeköpinge to Bjärred through open farmland, deciduous nature reserves and along the coast. The Järavallen–Löddeköpinge stage follows walking trails along a shallow bay, through a pine forest, across open terrain and over beach meadows rich in birdlife. The two descriptions present different landscapes: one route alternates between agricultural land, deciduous woodland and coast, while the other combines a bay, pine forest and beach meadows.

The historic river landscapes are also part of the region's orientation. As part of the “1000 years along the river” Leader project run by Kävlinge Municipality, historic river walks were held along the Kävlingeån and Lödde å between 2020 and 2022. This statement refers to that completed period and does not describe any current event planning.

Getting around the coastal area

Bus route 124 is documented as connecting Löddeköpinge with the coastal area. It runs between Löddeköpinge and Barsebäckshamn via Barsebäcksstrand. There is a bus stop along the route next to the car park at the beach. This also makes it possible to consider the choice of location in terms of how historic destinations inland are connected with coastal landscapes in the wider area, without assuming journey times or service frequencies.
