Bromölla between lakes, coast and culture

Bromölla lies in the transition zone between the Kristianstad Plain to the south and the hilly lake and wetland landscape to the north. Water, forests and the coast shape different sides of the municipality: Lake Ivösjön forms its western boundary, and its highly indented shoreline borders Lake Levrasjön. The coast is flat, shallow and rich in stones, with many skerries.

Waterfront landscape

The Holjeån valley is framed by the two bedrock massifs Västanåberget and Ryssberget. In the northern part of the municipality are beech forests that form one of the largest contiguous beech forest areas in the county. The Holjeåleden is a water route running from Östafors in the north to Lake Ivösjön in the south. When paddling, the route passes through the unspoilt nature of the Holjeån valley.

Along the Holjeåleden, you can stop at various points, discover sights, use barbecue areas and go fishing; there are also overnight accommodation options along the river. There are bathing spots on Lake Ivösjön in Bromölla municipality. In Valje, there is a seaside bathing spot with salt water. This places inland waters and the Baltic Sea coast, with their different waterscapes, side by side.

Hiking trails through forests and cultural landscapes

The Gustavsbergsleden is a 23-kilometre circular trail suitable for hiking and mountain biking. It runs between Lakes Ivösjön and Levrasjön through forest areas, passes the ruins of the former Gustavsberg boarding house and reaches the Brantahallar nature area. The 4-kilometre Lilla Kungsleden is shorter and begins near the main town of Bromölla. Its route passes the avenue and castle park at Årup and goes through a deer enclosure; it then follows the Skräbeån near its mouth into the Baltic Sea.

The route options therefore include different distances and ways of getting around: a longer loop for hiking and mountain biking, a water route for paddling and a short trail along a park, deer enclosure, stream and coast.

Industry, ceramics and local history

The Iföverkens industrimuseum tells the history of the works from its foundation in 1887 to the present-day company. Historical working methods and a selection of former products are on display. There is also an attached ceramics workshop, as well as rooms for temporary art exhibitions.

Scanisaurus, Europe’s largest stoneware fountain, stands in Ifötorget in the centre of Bromölla. Another museum is located in the waiting hall of Bromölla railway station: Havsdrakarnas Hus displays fossils and other remains from the Cretaceous period. Fossil-washing experiences can be booked through Åsens Fältstation.

Distinctive traces of regional history can also be found in the local streetscape. Concrete fences are considered a unique cultural feature of the area and extend for kilometres along gardens throughout Bromölla municipality. The linked selection of places also includes Näsum and Bromölla.

Cycle route and regional products

Humleslingan is an approximately 50-kilometre route around Skåne’s largest lake. It passes through natural and cultural landscapes and leads to around 40 sights. The loop uses ordinary paved main roads; gravel roads and a former railway embankment path can be chosen as detours from the road.

Regional connections also include products such as fruit, berries, vegetables, honey, cider, jam, fish and meat. They are available in restaurants, cafés and farm shops.

Culture and ecclesiastical architecture

S:t Petri kyrka was designed by the architect Carl Rosell and features interior furnishings by Gisela Trapp. The church was built in the first half of the 12th century in the Romanesque style. Wall paintings in the centre of the chancel arch and a medieval altarpiece have survived from this construction period.
