Süderbrarup: Hotels and Accommodation
The 20.18-kilometre circular hiking trail begins and ends at Königstraße 3 in Süderbrarup. It leads through the town, along a restored railway line, through the Peters- and Kuhholz woods, across the Thorsberger Moor and to the archaeological hill of Kummerhy.
Trails
The Historical Cultural and Nature Trail starts next to the former Schleidörfer tourist information office at Königstraße 3, by Brarup market square. An additional loop of the Thorsberger Moor Route includes eight stations. They explain the settlement landscape, archaeological finds, and excavated weapons and equipment.
Nature
At the centre of the Os nature reserve lies an approximately 500-metre-long, 9-metre-high glacial ridge that formed during the last ice age. The area includes heathland and wet lowland habitats. Orchids, small sedges and marsh marigolds can be found there; in addition, almost 30 plant species are classified as endangered.
The Edelsturm ruins, Lindholm and Kleiner Flintholm are located in the vicinity of Süderbrarup. Further afield in the region are Habernis Beach and Noer Beach.
Culture
The Angelner Steam Railway is a heritage railway with Scandinavian rolling stock that operates between Kappeln and Süderbrarup. A large part of the archaeological material from the Thorsberger Moor is housed in a permanent exhibition at the Archaeological State Museum of Schleswig at Gottorf Castle.
The Brarup Market is a recurring fair in Süderbrarup. It takes place from the Friday before the last weekend in July until the following Tuesday. The municipality describes it as the largest rural fair in Schleswig-Holstein. A feature associated with St. Jacobi Church in Süderbrarup and dated to 1578 is described as one of the oldest.
The wider regional area around Süderbrarup also includes Gottorf Castle, the state museum, the runestone and St. John's Monastery. The “Zur heiligen Quelle” outdoor swimming pool is a bathing facility in the centre of Süderbrarup and has been in operation since 1975.
