Handewitt: Hotels and accommodations

The Schäferhaus Foundation Nature Area features a semi-open, savanna-like grazing landscape with Konik horses and Galloways. In Handewitt, the landscape is used for walks, hikes and cycling tours. The area also includes an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails, as well as an approximately eight-kilometre circular riding route.

Nature and trails

The trails around Handewitt are open to equestrian sports and pedestrians. At the new Wanderup bathing lake, the multifunctional building provides sanitary facilities. The lake has a shallow-water zone for non-swimmers and a separate swimming zone enclosed by buoys.

Culture and everyday life

Handewitt Church has a history of more than 800 years. The present building was erected on the foundations of an earlier church and incorporates its preserved medieval tower. Inside, there are coloured glass windows, a wooden barrel vault in a neo-Gothic design and a Romanesque granite baptismal font from the 12th century.

The Handewitt Village Museum is located in a former schoolhouse on Kirchberg, opposite a protected historic church that can also be visited. It displays objects and equipment from domestic work, crafts and agriculture. The museum is run by a local support association and is connected with regional history and everyday culture. Its “From Grain to Bread” project is reviving the traditional art of bread baking. The Hof-Café at the Porzellanbörse serves homemade cakes and gateaux indoors or on the farm terrace.

Cycling routes and landscape

The RadRundUm-Flensburg network consists of three themed cycling routes, whose paths extend to Handewitt. Along the RadRundUm routes, themed stations explain nature, ecology, history and culture. The description of the RadRundUm routes names the conifer-rich Handewitt Forest as one of the area’s woodland landscapes. Through this forest area, the Seenland-um-Flensburg recreational area can be reached on foot; it can also be reached by bicycle, car or bus.

The approximately 245-kilometre Ochsenweg was a historic land route between Denmark and northern Germany and is now used for cycling, with a focus on regional natural and cultural history.
