Nature

Northeast of Gelting lies the 773-hectare Geltinger Birk nature reserve. Dunes, wetlands, heathland, moorland and open forests characterize the landscape. The area can be explored on foot along various paths, where Highland cattle and Konik horses may be seen grazing naturally.

The circular trail through Geltinger Birk is approximately 12 kilometres long. Access points are at Geltinger Noor and Mühle Charlotte, or at Falshöft Lighthouse.

Trails

The approximately 6-kilometre Krebs hiking route runs from Gelting via Lehbek, Gut Ohrfeld and Wackerballig back to Gelting. The Biene hiking route is approximately 8 kilometres long and leads from Gelting via Sillekjer, Rabenholz and Holmkjer Forest back again. The approximately 6-kilometre Schwan hiking route runs from Wackerballig via Düstnishy and Nordschauwald back to Wackerballig.

History

St. Catherine’s Church is a historic church in Gelting and is thought to have been built shortly after 1300. During a major renovation in 1793, the chancel was extended; the organ was completely restored in 2007. St. Catherine’s Church in Gelting also contains a former high altar scene dating from 1520–30, carved by a master from the circle of Lübeck sculptor Claus Berg.

Gut Gelting, also known as Gelting Castle, is an approximately 800-year-old estate and one of the oldest estates in Angeln. The manor house of Gelting Castle is privately owned and not open to visitors.

Mühle Charlotte stands at the entrance to Geltinger Noor and Geltinger Birk. It was built in 1826 to drain the Noor and mill grain. The mill is privately owned and has been converted into a holiday home.

Local character

Wackerballig Campsite is located directly on the beach of Gelting Bay and offers 30 tourist pitches for caravans and tents.

The Geltinger Shanty Choir preserves original shanties associated with 19th-century sailing ships. A hot Angler Muck is a typical winter drink in Gelting.
