Böxlund: Hotels and Accommodations

Böxlund is located directly on the German-Danish border. The area is strongly characterized by agriculture: farms cultivate the surrounding fields and shape the character of the landscape.

Nature

The Böxlund oak heath is located approximately 500 meters south of Böxlund. The former gravel pit in the Böxlund area contains a small body of water and open, nutrient-poor areas, some of which are protected biotopes. The presence of sand lizards and eagle owls has been documented in the Böxlund oak heath.

According to the protected-area regulations, entering the nature conservation area in the Böxlund section is prohibited; there are no public paths there.

History

Böxlund was first documented in 1584. The place name derives from the Danish “Bögslund” and means “beech grove.” Archaeological finds indicate that the Böxlund area was settled during the Neolithic period.

Getting Around

The wider area around the Amt Schafflund district offers numerous cycling and hiking routes with rest areas for longer tours. Historic churches, traditional thatched-roof houses, and farm shops are among the area’s characteristic features.

A 11-kilometer hiking route starting in Medelby takes approximately two hours, passes the Eichenkratt and the gravel pit south of Böxlund, and offers an optional detour to the old gravel pit as a place to stop and rest.

The Border Route is a 130-kilometer cross-border cycling route between Denmark and Germany. It is mostly flat and follows small paved farm roads as well as some separate gravel paths away from motorized traffic. Böxlund is listed as one of the settlements along the Border Route.
