Ödeshög on Lake Vättern – Nature, Trails and History
The Stora Lund nature reserve combines flower-rich steppe meadows and the cliffs of Lake Vättern with habitats for birds and fish; the clear water also offers good conditions for diving. The Östgötaleden trail runs along the cliffs there; opportunities for swimming, fishing and picnicking are also available in the area.
Water on Lake Vättern and the Lakes
The harbor at Hästholmen is a diving site. The clear water of Lake Vättern and the great depth close to the shore attract many sport divers. The harbor also has a bathing area with a lawn, sand, a jetty and changing rooms; a café, restaurant and toilets are about 100 meters away.
The bathing area at Trehörnasjön has jetties, a lawn, sand, picnic furniture, a playground, changing rooms and a toilet. Lake Trehörnasjön also offers opportunities for crayfish fishing. At Lake Visjön, two rowing boats without motors are available for rent for half a day or a full day.
Kayaks are usually launched at the harbor in Hästholmen and paddled toward Omberg; the one-way trip generally takes about 45 to 60 minutes. There is also a VätternKajak self-service station on Omberg for day rentals.
Hiking, Cycling and Nature Experiences
The Ödeshög–Omberg–Vadstena section of the Östgötaleden is designated as a Signature Trail, is suitable for beginners and experienced hikers, and can be reached by public transport. The Ödeshög municipality has several local walking and hiking trails, including Annastigen, Öningerundan, Brodderydsrundan and the route via Ålebäcken to Hästholmen.
The Glänås visitor area contains the 500-meter-long Strandpromenaden trail, the four-kilometer-long Vassleden trail and the approximately 700-meter-long Prinsessan Estelles sagostig fairy-tale trail. The different trail lengths make it easier to compare routes when planning your day.
Ekopark Omberg offers numerous hiking and cycling trails as well as nature and outdoor activities for families; it also highlights an interesting history. The hiking trails pass through terrain ranging from easy to more demanding, including accessible trails, and several nature reserves are located in the park. For cycling, there are two mountain bike trails as well as other easier-to-ride cycling routes through Ekopark Omberg.
Klockargårdsängen has a free public disc golf course with nine holes, suitable for beginners and experienced players. Omberg Zipline includes two high-rope courses and several ziplines in beech forest and mysterious coniferous forest near Stocklycke on Omberg. All tours are accompanied by guides and are possible from the age of seven without prior experience.
Churches, Monastery and TÃ¥kern
Heda Church is a medieval church and has been dendrochronologically dated to the middle of the 12th century. A piscina with reliefs of very high artistic quality is set into the chapel’s southern wall. Digital tours with additional information and audio guides are being developed for the churches of the parish, including Heda Church.
An open-air museum next to the Rökstenen explains the history of the stone. The four-ton rune stone contains some Lönnrunor, which were not intended to be legible to everyone. Alvastra Monastery was founded in 1143 by French monks of the Cistercian Order.
Ulf, the husband of Saint Birgitta, died in 1344 during a pilgrimage and was buried at Alvastra Monastery. The area around Alvastra was important to the formation of the Swedish kingdom in the Middle Ages.
