Vadstena between the Abbey Church, Castle and Lake Vättern
In Vadstena’s historic town center, cobblestone streets run between preserved wooden houses. Vadstena Castle began as a defensive fortress and was later transformed into a continental Renaissance palace. The castle offers guided tours and exhibitions; it also hosts medieval days, a Christmas market, and castle concerts.
History
Vadstena Abbey Church was consecrated on February 16, 1430. It was built according to the detailed instructions of Saint Birgitta. It is considered one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations. The palace of the Folkungaätten dates from the 1260s and became part of the first monastery of the Bridgettine Sisters in the 14th century.
Culture
Hospitalmuseet – Stora Dårhuset was the first hospital in Sweden built exclusively for people with mental illnesses. The Stora Dårhuset building is a state-protected historic monument. The building that houses the Sancta Birgitta Klostermuseum successively served as a royal palace, a monastery, a veterans’ home, and a psychiatric hospital. A general guided tour traces this development through to the museum.
The medieval two-story storehouse of Vadstena Stadsmuseum has a ground floor made of rubble stone and an upper floor made of brick. Vadstena Academy creates operas by commissioning new works and staging older operas that are often unjustly forgotten. The Old Theatre of Vadstena is associated with opera and concert performances; the building has been preserved almost in its original condition and is one of Sweden’s oldest theatres.
Pilgrimage
Pilgrimscentrum offers courses, hikes, retreats, and seminars and provides information about pilgrimage routes. Vadstena is the destination of the pilgrimage hike on the Birgittaleden. The Abbey Church also connects the historic site with a European pilgrimage tradition.
Nature and Water
The Tåkern nature reserve extends across Vadstena, Mjölby, and Ödeshög and includes birdwatching towers, a Naturum visitor center, and marked hiking trails. At Omberg, there are opportunities for cycling, hiking, and sightseeing excursions with views; the Östgötaleden and Pilgrimsleden trails lead from Ödeshög via Omberg to Vadstena.
Lake Vättern offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and boat trips. Vadstena has a beach and a guest harbor. The different focuses of history, pilgrimage routes, and water activities can be considered separately when planning a personal trip.

Long-distance buses and trains to Vadstena run via Linköping, Mjölby, and Motala; from there, onward regional bus connections to Vadstena are available.
