Borghamn can be explored through two specific themes: its long limestone tradition and its guided trails. Together, they raise different questions for planning your trip: Would you like to focus on local history, choose a particular hike, or make the harbour and historic sites the main focus? When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether you would like to set aside more time for local history, guided trails or the harbour.

Limestone and Heritage

The limestone quarrying tradition in Borghamn is about 900 years old. Cistercian monks quarried stone here for Alvastra Abbey, which was inaugurated in 1143. These details provide two historical reference points: the approximate age of the quarrying history in Borghamn and the year the abbey was inaugurated.

The Borghamn historic monument comprises 22 buildings, the entire harbour, Bockakyrkogården with its pasture, and the dog graves at the entrance to the area. Since 2023, it has been classified as a working-life museum. Drottning Ommas borg offers a different point in time: it is the northernmost and smallest of Omberg’s three hillforts from the Migration Period (450–550). Compared with the approximately 900-year-old limestone tradition, the fort points to a much earlier era.

Guided Trails and Planning Your Time

The guided hike “Inte bara sten byggde Borghamn” is 1.5 kilometres each way and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. It explores the development of society and cultural values between Västerlösa and Hovanäset. Check the current dates before planning, as the availability of individual dates may change.

A guided cultural and nature walk follows the shore of Lake Vättern, visits Borghamn’s limestone quarry and other quarry sites, and ends at Bårstabrottet. Groups can also book for other dates.

The Borghamn–Örberga section of the Östgötaleden is designated as the Signaturled Omberg and takes about 3–4 hours on foot. For planning your time, there are two specific durations to compare: 1 hour and 30 minutes for the guided themed hike and about 3–4 hours for the section to Örberga. The first duration covers a one-way distance of 1.5 kilometres; the two options therefore offer different timeframes and themes.

Harbour and Local Flavours

The harbour in Borghamn is a swimming area and is also included in its entirety in the historic monument. This lets you combine time by the water with a look at the extent of the historic monument in the same place.

Another local speciality is the Borghamn waffle, made with smoked vendace from Lake Vättern, house-made wild garlic pesto and crème fraîche. As menus may change, it is worth checking the current menu before your visit. Together with the quarry sites and guided walks, it adds a culinary point of interest to the area’s cultural history during your stay.
