Ã…tvidaberg between Oak Landscapes and Industrial History

In Ã…tvidaberg, valuable parts of the oak landscape Eklandskapet, designated as being of national interest, lie within the built-up area. Some oak parks and green spaces belong to the Natura 2000 network.
Immediately next to Åtvidaberg lies the Åtvidsnäs nature reserve, with grazed meadows and groves of deciduous trees containing old oaks and linden trees. At the main car park, there are picnic tables and information boards; by the Östgötaleden trail near Fallaån, there is a shelter with a barbecue area and a dry toilet. A combined cycle and pedestrian path from Strandgatan in Åtvidaberg leads through a tunnel beneath Road 35 to Åtvidsnäs.

Nature and Trails
The Oak Loop in Åtvidaberg is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and has five information boards. Hälsans stig starts at Gamla Torget and is approximately 7 kilometres long. In the Åtvidsnäs nature reserve, Sjörundan is a marked walking loop of approximately one kilometre.
The Östgötaleden trail runs through Åtvidaberg, through the castle park at Adelsnäs and through several nature reserves. The Bysjön runt walk passes through grazing land and across small watercourses before reaching the grounds of Adelsnäs and the castle park; as a loop, it forms part of the Östgötaleden.

Industry and History
Åtvidaberg’s industrial environment developed around medieval mines and is of great social and industrial-historical significance. Åtvidabergs Folkpark was established in 1908. It has a dance floor, a playground, outdoor exercise equipment, adventure golf and a boules court.
The adventure golf course in Åtvidaberg consists of 12 holes, three of which have an Åtvidaberg theme. In Närstad, Mormorsgruvan has a small mining museum and a mine trail. Dacke Skans is a hillfort with far-reaching views over southern Uknadalen.
Gärdserums kyrka is one of Sweden’s earliest Neo-Gothic churches, is open to visitors and serves as a wayside church in summer. Hannäs kyrkoruin comprises the ruins of a stone church from the 15th century; there are also traces of an older wooden church from the 12th and 13th centuries. There are picnic tables at Hannäs kyrkoruin, and parking is available beside the road.
Åtvidaberg is home to the world’s only functioning solar cannon. The ÅSSA industri- och bilmuseum displays vehicles and objects connected with local manufacturing and former local business activities. The Åtvidabergs skolmuseum is also located in the same premises.
Water, Railway and Garden
The music boat E/S Vågspelet offers guided trips on Lake Bysjön departing from Tornbryggan. E/S Vågspelet is adapted for wheelchairs and rollators and has a ramp. Solkanonklubben rents out canoes at Lake Bysjön for shorter trips of a few hours or longer day excursions.
Risten-Lakviks Järnväg offers a nostalgic steam train journey from the station area in Lakvik to Lake Risten and back. In Lakvik’s station building, the café serves homemade open sandwiches, waffles, pastries and refreshments. Skogsträdgården Humlestigen offers guided tours focusing on the cultivation method and the structure of the forest garden.
