Discover Hobro on Mariager Fjord

Hobro is located at the innermost end of Mariager Fjord. It is also home to Denmark’s oldest wooden shipyard, which has been building and maintaining ships since 1849. The Svanen excursion boat docks in Hobro, where passengers can also board and disembark.

On foot through forests, fjord landscapes and history

For exploring on foot, the approximately 2.6-kilometre-long Fyrkatstien trail connects the centre of Hobro with the Vikingemuseet Fyrkat and the UNESCO ring fortress of Fyrkat. The marked Hobro-Østerskov route is approximately 6 kilometres long and leads through Hobro Østerskov and the area along Mariager Fjord. Its starting point is approximately 800 metres from Hobro bus station. From Duehøj, the route offers a view across Mariager Fjord. For route planning, the approximate lengths of 2.6 and 6 kilometres can be considered as two different route distances. The approximately 800 metres to the bus station refer to the starting point of the route, not its total length.

Fyrkat and Hobro’s museums

The Vikingemuseet Fyrkat preserves finds from the excavations at Fyrkat and explains the transition from Norse mythology to Christianity. A reconstructed longhouse is open to visitors; guided tours in English and Danish are offered on all opening days. The rampart at Fyrkat marks the original site of a Viking fortress that enclosed 16 large longhouses. Fyrkat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of five Danish Viking fortresses. At Fyrkat, The Chieftain’s Farm consists of nine reconstructed houses from an aristocratic estate dating from the time of King Harald Bluetooth.

Kunstetagerne Hobro is a museum of modern art and design in the former Bies brewery, built in 1857. The Gasmuseet is located in the former Hobro Gasværk from 1898, which was converted into exhibition space and a cultural centre. The Gasmuseet includes a science room and an outdoor activity wall. A professional regional theatre has been operating at Kulturhafen since 2003. Hobro Kirke displays a distinctive architectural feature: it is one of the few churches in which both the tower and the altar face east.

Maritime craftsmanship and local specialities

At the Maritime Cultural Centre Mariagerfjord in Hobro, visitors can immerse themselves in the maritime world of wooden ships and the history of Mariager Fjord from the waterside. The Lystfartøjsmuseet displays around 30 wooden boats, including the cruiser Silvana, which guests can board. Bies Bryghus in Hobro produces beer and offers beer tastings as well as a restaurant. Those exploring Hobro by bike encounter a shared section of the Hærvejsruten, cycle route 3, and the Mariager Fjord cycle route, cycle route 32, between the harbour and Fyrkat. On this shared section, the two connections are marked with route numbers 3 and 32. The Ambu-festen is also part of the town’s history: Hobro’s town festival was first held in 1920 under the name Ambulancedagen.
