Helberskov: Coast, Village History and Bjerget

Helberskov combines coastal landscapes, village history and opportunities on the water. Helberskov Beach is part of a coast shaped by land reclamation, with beach meadows and shallow water. Swimming is possible along the coast near Helberskov; it is also considered suitable for windsurfing. Helberskov is also one of the Mariagerfjord Municipality’s 15 bathing water stations; the site has an official bathing water profile. The coast with its swimming and windsurfing, the densely built historic village centre and Bjerget with its views offer different focal points for planning a trip to Helberskov.

A village with a densely built historic centre

Helberskov is a so-called Forteklyngeby: The farmsteads are clustered closely around the village pond and the old meeting place. This is complemented by the closely spaced farmsteads that were not relocated, as well as the smaller, tightly packed rural houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, which line a winding road. The village is considered well preserved and has many old half-timbered houses. The structure of the village is therefore evident not only in individual buildings, but also in the close spatial arrangement of the farmsteads, pond and meeting place.

Half-timbering, coast and local history

One of the notable buildings is Lodsgården. All three types of half-timbering can be found on its buildings. Helberskov Pump House was built on the coast north of Helberskov in 1947. Together with the old houses and the winding road, these buildings provide concrete points of interest for a walking tour focusing on architecture and local history.

Bjerget as a landscape and memorial site

Bjerget in Helberskov is a moraine hill offering wide views over the surrounding area. During the Second World War, a German coastal battery was located there. The German garrison on Bjerget surrendered on 10 May 1945, one of the last in Denmark to do so. A memorial stone commemorates the liberation, which did not take place in Helberskov until that very day, 10 May 1945. Bjerget is also a local meeting place where activities for residents and tourists in the region take place.

Festivals on Bjerget and nature at Als Odde

Local traditions are also visible on Bjerget: Fastelavn is celebrated with ring riding, and Whitsun with a maypole. Nearby lies Als Odde, a protected coastal area with mudflats, beach meadows and a small fishing village. There is free access there; in the plantation north of the protected area, there are publicly accessible paths. From Als, the headland can be reached by driving south through Helberskov. This makes it possible to consider the village, coast and protected area together as part of a regional overview.
