Øster Melholt: North Sea Trail, Hiking Routes and Melholt Church

Øster Melholt combines marked trails, different hiking distances and a distinctive church building into a destination for visitors who enjoy spending their days between activity, landscape and history. The area offers several specific points of interest: Between Hou and Melholt, the North Sea Trail passes through woodland and open areas, various routes lead through the surroundings, and Melholt Church adds an architectural accent. The Geraaruten, a regional recreational cycling route 54 from Melholt to Dronninglund Castle, is also part of the character of Øster Melholt.

Hiking between Melholt and Lille Vildmose

Near the villages of Geraa and Melholt, there are three hiking routes with lengths of 7.6 km, 4.7 km and 3.7 km. The different routes provide a clear basis for your planning: You can assess the length of your intended hike in advance without equating the routes with one another. In addition, the Geraa–Melholt route passes by Melholt Church. This allows you to combine part of a route with a visit to the church building, while the three stated distances provide separate guidance for shorter and longer tours.

The section from Melholt to Lille Vildmose is 32 km long and forms part of the international North Sea Trail. In Denmark, the North Sea Trail is approximately 1,500 km long. Between Hou and Melholt, it passes through woodland and open areas. Up to Melholt, the trail is marked with blue signs bearing a white, wave-shaped „N“. This marking specifically describes the route as far as Melholt and helps you consider the North Sea Trail as a distinct element of your excursion planning.

Melholt Church: Building History and Façade Details

Melholt Church is an official trail church and is open to visitors year-round from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It may be closed due to weddings, funerals, holidays or public holidays. If you include the church in your daily itinerary, this reservation therefore forms an immediate part of the stated opening hours.

Melholt Church was built between 1910 and 1911 according to designs by the architect Ludvig Frederik Olesen, who was born in 1853 and died in 1916. Its exterior walls are richly decorated with round-arched friezes on all masonry surfaces. The construction period, the named architect responsible for the design and the continuous façade details give the church building a clearly defined historical and architectural character. This makes Melholt Church a specific landmark along the way, especially for visitors who also take note of distinctive buildings while hiking.

Gerå, Melholt Plantation and Torndrup Beach

The Gerå flows through the southern part of Melholt Plantation. Torndrup Beach is also located in the vicinity of Melholt. Both names add to the possible landscape connections around the area: The Gerå represents a body of water within the plantation, while Torndrup Beach is located near Melholt. This provides various specific themes to choose from between hiking, cycling, visiting the church and exploring the landscape.
