Asaa: Beach, Nature and Maritime History

Asaa begins with a coastal history: Asaa Beach was formed as a result of the silting-up of the harbour. The coastal meadows of Asaa and Geraa were designated as a wildlife reserve by the Danish Ministry of Environment and Energy. Waders use them as resting, feeding and breeding grounds.

Coastal Meadows, Birds and Beech Forest

In spring and autumn, birdwatchers come to the coastal meadows of Asaa and Geraa to observe migrating birds and birds searching for food. The Asaa and Geraa reserve is regarded as a kind of miniature Wadden Sea. Birdwatching in the coastal meadows is a spring and autumn activity; wood anemones in Vestergaards Skov are a spring sight.

Vestergaards Skov offers a different natural highlight. The forest is a beech forest where there are good opportunities to observe deer. In spring, wood anemones can be seen there in bloom.

Routes and Activities on the Water

The black route of the Kløverstier Asaa begins at Asaa's market square and follows the North Sea Trail southwards to Gerå. In addition, the section of the North Sea Trail from Sæby to Melholt continues southwards to Asaa and Geraa. Both routes lead southwards, but start from different local reference points. Asaa's market square is the starting point of the black route; Sæby and Melholt form the reference point of the other section.

On the water, Asaa offers SUP stand-up paddleboarding tours along Asaa's east coast. Asaa's east coast is the specific local reference point for this water activity.

Harbour, Museum and Local History

The Asaa Harbour Museum displays fishing equipment, engines and navigation equipment. Fishing equipment, engines and navigation equipment represent different aspects of harbour operations. For larger groups, the museum offers guided tours by arrangement. During the Danish summer school holidays, the museum organises crab fishing for children at the harbour every Thursday at 10:00. The Historic Harbour Day of the Asaa Harbour Museum took place on the first Sunday in August from 10:00 to 16:00. The Thursday event takes place during the Danish summer school holidays.

Asaa Harbour is home to historic, red-painted fishermen's houses. Asaa Church is a Romanesque Revival church, richly decorated with round-arch friezes on all its exterior walls.

The historic references extend from the harbour to Lodsgade. At Lodsgade 23 stands the Schützenhaus, which was built around 1400. The shooting ramp is still visible in the western gable, and the building was formerly a customs house. Kragh's House at Lodsgade 27 was built in 1750. More than three centuries of local history lie between the Schützenhaus from around 1400 and Kragh's House from 1750. Both historic houses are located on Lodsgade, at house numbers 23 and 27.
