Dronninglund: Forest Trails, Mills and Culture

Dronninglund combines expansive forest landscapes, waterways and sites of cultural and historical significance. Dronninglund Storskov lies at the southern end of Jyske Ås and covers 961 ha. Dronninglund Naturpark stretches between Dronninglund and Dronninglund Slot. Dronninglund is also home to Øster Møllesø, which covers 24,000 m². This brings nature experiences and historical destinations together within a compact thematic area.

Forest, Water and Marked Trails

There are three marked hiking trails to choose from in Dronninglund Storskov: Sømoseruten, measuring 2 or 3 km; Bøgeskovsruten, measuring 3.5 or 6 km; and Nåleskovsruten, measuring 5 km. The different trail lengths make it easier to plan your day. Another trail is the 1.4 km-long Eventyrstien. It begins on the outskirts of Dronninglund and ends at Dronninglund Slot.

Øster Møllesø can also be explored on foot: A walk around the lake offers beautiful views of the water. From Dorf Møllegård, a scenic path leads around the mill lake. Dronninglund Storskov is also home to Forheksede Bakke, a cycling experience where the water appears to flow uphill.

Church, Castle and Mill History

Dronninglund Kirke was built between 1160 and 1200 as the convent church of the Hundslund nunnery. Its frescoes include depictions of the Nine Worthies, a motif not known from other churches. Today, the church is structurally connected to Dronninglund Estate. Dronninglund Slot dates back to the original Hundslund Monastery, which was probably founded by Benedictine nuns in the 12th century.

Øster Mølle is a watermill from the 16th century that belonged to Dronninglund Slot. Dorf Møllegård offers a different glimpse into history: The site tells the story of life on a mill farm at the beginning of the 20th century. The listed mill farm complex includes a watermill from the 17th century. Dronninglund Slot is closed to the public but can be viewed from the outside.

Museums, Art and Active Days

Egnssamlingen for Østvendsyssel tells the story of Østvendsyssel from the Stone Age to the mid-20th century. Høstdagen at Egnssamlingen for Østvendsyssel is an annual tradition. More contemporary in focus is Dronninglund Kunstcenter, a 1,200 m², three-storey exhibition building constructed in 1977. From March to November, it presents changing exhibitions.

There are also specific destinations for sporting interests. Dronninglund Golfklub has an 18-hole woodland course and also welcomes visiting players. Dronninglund Naturpark has a mini-golf course, tennis courts and padel courts. The options therefore range from short walks by the water and forest hikes to cycling experiences, golf, racket sports and exploration of cultural and historical sites.
