Peenemünde: Hotels and Accommodations

Peenemünde is a municipality in the northern part of the island of Usedom in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and belongs to the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. Peenemünde is also Usedom’s northernmost municipality; the town is located at the transition where the Peene River flows into the Baltic Sea.

Culture and History

The Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum places the history of weapons development and their use in context, as well as the history of the Peenemünde experimental facilities. It also examines the people who worked in Peenemünde, how they lived there, and the reasons why the weapons programs and projects were pursued. From 1936 to 1945, the Peenemünde experimental facilities operated as a major military research center. Novel weapons were developed and produced there, including an early cruise missile and a large rocket; forced labor was involved in this work.

The Peenemünde power station and Test Stand VII Peenemünde are located in the immediate vicinity of Peenemünde. The Peenemünde oxygen plant is another named feature in the surrounding area.

Nature and Coast

The Peenemünde Hook is a coastal area where heritage conservation and nature conservation are combined. The landscape includes salt marshes, brackish-water reed beds, marshy dune valleys, and beach ridges covered with oak and beech trees. It is also home to rare and protected plant species. Notable bird species include white-tailed eagles, cormorants, coots, lapwings, and dunlins.

Dänholm and Kleiner Wotig are located in the immediate vicinity of Peenemünde, while Lubmin Beach is part of the surrounding area. The surrounding area also includes Wolgast Zoo and the Trassenheide Butterfly Farm.
